Interpersonal Communication in Action

In chapter 11 of the article, the depiction of the concept friendship is exemplary, enabling the reader understand him or herself better. Personally, I gain a lot of knowledge from learning how to handle issues involving me and other people. It is essential that I always consider the reaction of my fellows before making any decisions, despite the developed interest and need to undertake them. Firstly, to my understanding, interpersonal communication refers to the interactions between two or more people, either physically or through other media. The purpose of interpersonal communication is the need for the creation of relationships with other beings. We all get into interpersonal communications for different reasons, among them functional, quantitative, relational, and situational.
The chapter about Friendship develops a number of communication theories, majorly the theory of social penetration. Every being is consistently seeking relational closeness with other beings. Humans, for example, require relational closeness with other people to feel complete, owing to the development of a sense of importance to others. The closeness often progresses from superficial to intimate through the process of self-disclosure. When seeking friends, the major driving force is the reliance on communication and connections for survival (Halinen 10). However, the relationship evolves satisfying other personal needs.

Another theory explaining interpersonal communication is self-disclosure. The theory of self-disclosure applies to one’s intentions to enable people understand them. In the article, the theory of self-disclosure is seen in the need for friends and relationships with others. The author notes that each human being is constantly seeking relations with other people, with the aim of self-disclosure. Everyone is unconsciously seeking understanding from other people, whom he or she can trust. Therefore, it develops the need for friends, family, and other relationships.

Relationship dialectics

The existence of tensions and conflicts gives birth to interpersonal communication between the conflicting parties. For the elimination of internal worries, people seek to communicate in the effort of eliminating any existing conflicts or tensions among them. The internal dialectic seeks connectedness, certainty, and openness. To the contrary, external dialectic seeks inclusion, revelation, and conventionality. These needs result in interpersonal communication, enabling each achieve them in their lives (Wood 10).

Uncertainty reduction

It is evident that during the start of relationships with new people, the level of uncertainty is high, leading the individual into seeking better communication with the other person. The betterment of the communication minimizes the extent of personal worries regarding their partner, enabling them to relate in a better context. Human beings consistently seek to understand from those they relate to, and thus the constant need to better their bonds. With the reduction of the uncertainty, the relating parties feel much closer and believe that their relationship has improved (Halinen 9).

Self-assessment

The class readings provide great insights, which I consistently apply in my life. All the learned concepts are vital for one’s relations with others. Personally, I benefit from the fact that I am extremely social, aiding me in making the right relationships and for the right purposes. It is through these reading that I have been in a position to understand other people, gaining me more confidence and knowledge.
Face-to-face dialog is the best form of communication to my opinion. I believe that through the improvement of my skills as an interpersonal communicator, I improve my relationship skills and better my chances of accomplishing my goals. It is through the class readings and taught concepts that I have become a better interpersonal communicator. I have to understand the roles that communication plays in my life, and how I can succeed in bettering it.

Complementarily

A class-read concept such as complementarily is efficient into winning the trust of others. To better relations with other people, I often apply the principle in winning their trust, bettering the chances of achieving my set target. For example, during presentations, I seek to develop the best communication with my audience, enabling them understand my presentation and consequently liking me more. It has helped me achieve most of my set targets, bettering my chances of succeeding in any sector provided I believe and focus on achieving.
Communication competencies better my conversations with fellow students and friends, maximizing output and personal gains. During debates, ideas, information exchange and other forms of conversations, I apply the concepts class learned to better my participation. It is through understanding the psychology of communication that I have bettered my participation in mutual conversations with fellows and new people in my life.

Role of concepts in personal life

In terms of friendship, class readings, concepts, and theories have helped me improve my relationships with my allies. It is through my understanding of the class work that I can help keep my relationships with all my friends intact, helping me retain a shoulder to lie on at any time. Self-disclosure has been one of the vitals concepts that I have developed from the class work. I have learned to communicate efficiently with my fellows, bettering my internal feelings. With the help of the class-learned concepts, I can now easily make friends and keep them without having to give too much. I have understood the vitals in relationships, easing my interaction with all people, despite their backgrounds.

Skills for better relationships

The skills of retaining friends have been of major significance in my life, and through them, I have created an array of connections with people from diverse backgrounds. Openness is one of my most applied concepts, and through it, I have been able to make strong ties with people. I also have made friendship a priority, allowing me to ensure that all my actions aim at growing the relationship I share with others. Class reading have also helped me to be thoughtful in my actions, and always aiming at being reliable and dependable by my friend. These concepts have been a major turning point in my life, in relation to relationships, assisting me in eliminating any drawbacks present in any of the ties I share. I previously held different opinions and views regarding friendship, hindering achievement of my objectives of making and strengthening ties with all people that I associated.
One of my most cherished relationships is that between my family and me. In chapter 13, family is depicted as two or more interdependent individuals who have had a common history. They have a current reality and expect to influence each other's decisions in the future (Adler 2). Before the learning of the intercommunication concepts, I did not mind much about relationships and most of my actions were self-centered and aimed at self-bettering. I did not often perform selfless tasks. Rather, I only focused on using my time for my selfish benefit. After the class readings, I developed a new perception about life and learned to love people and focus all my efforts on bettering my relationships with others.

Family relationship

My family, for instance, is caring, loving, and very encouraging. I previously could not understand why, but the concepts taught in class have revolutionized my outlook. I have now developed an attitude that aims at creating better relationships with other people, both for my personal benefits and as a sign of appreciation for their participation in my life. My family has been the closest people to me and has seen me through much of my undertakings. It is through its advice, assistance, and encouragement that I have managed to grow up into whom I am currently. It has helped me realize the most out of myself, enabling me to become a better person, I believe.
I value my relationship with my family, and I avoid all actions that could result in conflicts or tension among us. I always consult them before undertaking any actions that they would otherwise not have approved. Our relationship is voluntary, and the driver to my choosing was the realization of my family’s roles in my life (Adler 12). They have been a pillar that has helped the cruise over all challenges I have faced, maximizing my confidence and courage in tackling any difficulties.

Relationship dynamics

Our relationship is of mutual benefit, and we believe in following a code of conduct. We are all aware of things that we cannot do to others, and those that we have permission. Parents are the overall seer, and they have a major responsibility, which is of advising and encouraging us. However, the set rules are few to minimize conflict and disagreement at home. We encourage being selfless, and all our actions should aim at the betterment of every family member. These beliefs and ideologies have been a major driver of our unity and harmony, which is the core value in any relationship.

Relationship with friends

My relationships with friends and colleagues have also improved because of the class readings and knowledge obtained. I have learned to deal with conflicts and disagreements, and I focus at eliminating and minimizing their occurrence in our relationships. I believe in the power of friendship, and it is through it that I can achieve success. Alone, I come across many limitations and friends act as my pillar to achieving the set objectives.

Relationship dynamics

Through interpersonal communication, I have managed to hold ties with people from diverse backgrounds, helping me achieve my life goals. With their support, I easily get help for sophisticated tasks, allowing me to accomplish fully. Friends have played a major role in my life, and through them, I have achieved limitless success in my life. The dynamics of my relationship with friends is helping each other at times of need, encouragement and supporting each other’s ideas.
Interpersonal communication is the driving factor that always keeps us together, enabling us achieve all our goals. My friends and I constantly help each other on any issues either of us is facing, and we have developed a circle of friendship ties. When am in need, I believe that I have a shoulder to lean onto, and so do they during harsh times. We relate on good terms, fostering our care for each other, and thus improving each of our individual lives.
