Just before, during, and after mid-terms I fear to look at myself in the mirror. Sometimes I just place a towel over it because I can’t be bothered. I know I look like hell. Then on some days (only on some days) I get the courage to take off that towel from the mirror. When I look at it my worst fears are confirmed.
I notice my bloodshot green eyes caused by not only long hours of studying, but also insomnia influenced by worrying thoughts of keeping my GPA score up. I can’t help but to recognize my dark brown hair which is haywire and pointing in various directions. Some strands pointing up, and some strands pointing down. There are others that are pointed to the side and some are cocked in a diagonal fashion. I couldn’t help but give up a howl. I look so pathetic. My skin (which is pale enough already) is now even more pale and sallow. I look like I haven’t seen any sun in a hundred years. My days of staying indoors and studying all day have finally caught with me. When I should be out working on my tan and my backstroke at the beach, I’m locked away from civilization studying my whole life away.
I also notice dark circles under my eyes. It looks as if I was in a fight for my life. I look like I was punched out. Maybe I am in the fight for my life. I can’t wait for these mid-terms to be over.
Horrors of horrorsI’ve also gained more weight. As if my life doesn’t suck enough. I’ve been trying to eat my way out of my depression. It’s the only thing that can stop me from committing suicide. Now that has caught up with me, too. A round, chubby face has taken the place of a slim, slender one.
My teeth look discolored and yellow. That’s also the coffee drinking catching up with me. It’s what I need to stay up at nights. I like coffee but it seems as if coffee doesn’t like me. Did I say that my life sucked?
Oh, I cannot believe this! I see a faint new wrinkle running across the entire width of my forehead. This line reminds me of all the worry and anxiety I have to deal with while doing these mid-terms! The expression on my face is blank and empty just like my life.
After seeing all of this, I then finally decide to let that towel stay on that mirror until the end of the semester. My education is still more important than my looks (or so they tell me). Therefore, I need to focus on that at least until these mid-terms are over.
