St. Louis in the American state of Missouri has multiple times been listed as one of the most dangerous cities in the entire country. With a Crime Index of about 3.63, it experiences an average of thirty-five point three per one hundred thousand people. While there has been a significant cut in the amount if crimes are happening in the city, it still ranks as the second most dangerous US city.
St. Louis has remained quite cut off from its surroundings. The city has not expanded much to take in the surrounding safe neighborhoods under its vicinity due to which the crime rates have remained high. Other factors have played a huge role too. For example, St. Louis remains amongst those US cities which still do not prioritize a college degree over the actual work. Out of the entire population, only about 30.8% of people can boast of having a college education. Furthermore, even though St. Louis ranks second (after Platte) in the per capita income listings of the Missouri county at $33,344, it still earns about half of what the highest earning counties earn at an average of about $60,000. The per capita income is insufficient when one considers the fact that St. Louis’ families usually house more people than the average American family.
Another reason is being cited as St. Louis’ rampant underground drug industry and the heavy use of cocaine in the area. According to report, an entire cocaine selling industry operates in the city, sometimes with the help of the official police (although no authorized and authentic data exists to solidify that claim).
Quite recently, the unrest pertaining in Ferguson (after the murder of Michael Brown by a police officer) spread in St. Louis as well, and that further helped facilitate criminal activities.
