I find the nursing profession noble because their role is unique as front line health care providers. The profession of a nurse takes an individual to a unique position where they have the opportunity to show compassion and care to others. I am inspired by nurse advocates who are able to touch and change the lives of their ailing patients, helping them overcome their pain and difficulties, and be able to provide assistance in coping with their conditions with a positive outlook. I chose nursing because it gives me the opportunity to show my sincerity in helping people and make their lives better. I always see every individual as unique and my ability to build a good personal relationship with patients will give me the opportunity to pursue becoming a nurse advocate. Nursing advocacy is one of the principal foundations of the modern concept of a nurse’s role and my ability to communicate and build a trusting nurse-patient relationship is one of my best skills. According to Hall and Ritchie (2013), an effective nurse advocate is one who is able to see the patient as a whole being and is able to understand their distinct and specific needs towards the achievement of better patient treatment outcomes. Inspired by this nursing role concept, my personal qualities and special interest in the health care profession inspired me to become a nurse. I believe that I will be an effective nurse because of my educational foundation and personal qualities who can easily relate to the personal needs of my patients and to promote the delivery of holistic approach to nursing care.
In addition to my desire to become a nurse advocate, I find the nursing profession very practical in caring for my family. Being in the medical field provides me the advantage of delivering personal health care services to my loved ones and in case of emergency. My ability to provide health services gives me the satisfaction of being capable of responding to the health needs of the people around me. Nurses are known for their exceptional contribution in the health care field. They are in the front line when it comes to building relationships with patients and in providing them health services. Their role may even extend in becoming a surrogate family of their patients because of their personal contact with them and their family circle. I want to become a part of this exceptional health care service providers in changing the quality of lives of ailing patients.
Among the other reasons why I chose nursing is the consideration of the job opportunities available to professional nurse practitioners. There is a career mobility in the profession, where one has many options in which nursing field you want to pursue. Nurses can become a hospital health care staff, become a community health nurse, work in clinics, pursue a legal nurse consultant career, and become a teacher and a medical researcher as among many others. It offers flexibility where one can explore various possibilities of which nursing career they find most comfortable working. There is a job security in whatever nursing field one may like to pursue. Nurses also receive competitive salaries while offering a career that comes with the satisfaction of being able to help others.
Lastly, being a nurse imposes the professional value of promoting health and the general well-being and dignity of people. This concept of a nurse’s role is a big challenge to me on how to become effective in my own self determination of becoming an advocate of patient rights to live a quality life that they deserve. Every individual with ailment and disability struggle with their own pain and difficulties and nurses are empowered to promote the delivery of quality health care services. I see the nursing profession as an opportunity for me to nurture my desire of helping others in any way that I can through my education and nursing skills learned from school. Every person should impart their own unique contribution in helping others and becoming a nurse is my own way of sharing my contribution in touching the lives of other people.
