Should The University Require Freshman To Live On Campus?

Introduction
Every university enrolls or registers freshmen each year. These freshmen are important for the continuation of the education cycle in various regions. Nevertheless, most of the universities have policies and rules that govern various aspects surrounding their freshmen. These policies cover a wide scope, including their learning, sports, leadership, administration, and students’ affairs. The students’ affairs, on the other hand, cover different aspects, some of which include the issue of living on campus. This aspect is important and has led to various debates and rebuttals on the same. As such, the university should not require the freshmen to live on campus.

Privacy

When the university requires the freshmen to live on campus, it limits their privacy. Most of the universities have policies or regulations that govern the manner in which the freshmen live on the campus. These regulations often place restrictions on some of the activities that these freshmen can have. As such, living on campus could be a disadvantage to some of the freshmen wishing to exercise their freedom.
For instance, some universities place restrictions on the time required by the freshmen to be in school. As such, freshmen have to live by these rules lest they find themselves in disciplinary committees of the University. Limiting the privacy of the freshmen denies them a certain degree of their rights. Denying them, their rights could make them feel compelled or oppressed by the management of the universities, which could instigate the development of demonstrations.
Most of these limits on the privacy of the freshmen are governed by the security policies or measures that the university management bodies have in place. That is, having the freshmen or the student be in the university by a given time minimizes the risks that they could have in terms of insecurity past that time. Whereas this aspect might be helpful to the freshmen, it limits the amount of time that they can have, which means that there is a limit placed on the activities that they can engage in or undertake. As such, some of them could consider this limit as a limitation of their freedom in their campus life.

Limited Amount of Space

Another reason, why the university should not require the freshmen to live on the campus, is the limited space in these campuses. Most universities expand their operations and programs continuously to accommodate the increasing number of student enrolled. Additionally, the university management does not have control over the number of students meeting the merit of their desire. As such, there could be situations when the university has a huge number of admitted or registered freshmen. As such, there is a limited amount of space in the university to accommodate the freshmen.
The limited amount of space in the campuses leads to congestion in the residence halls. This congestion, on the other hand, becomes harmful to the freshmen in various ways. First, in case of an outbreak infectious diseases, the spreading could be vital, which could lead to fatal consequences for many of the freshmen. In such a case, annihilating this issue could be costly to the university.
Second, the limited amount of space reduces the desirable comfort by the freshmen in the university life. A place that is not comfortable to them is likely to lead to the development of discontent among the freshmen. Consequently, this discontentment affects their learning because it kills or reduces their morale towards any aspect related to that university. Third, a limited space places pressure on the resources provided by the University. That is; the available resources in the university could be sufficient to satisfy all the freshmen. As such, some of them are forced to look for alternatives for dealing with the inadequacy of the available resources. The alternatives that these freshmen look for might not conform to the policies or regulations of the University. As such, the freshmen might find themselves against the odds of defending themselves on the disciplinary or regulatory board. Similarly, the university itself might also have challenges in providing explanations to the student organization or other interested bodies.

Living on Campus is Expensive

Living on campus is expensive to both the students and the freshmen. Nevertheless, it is much expensive for the students. That is; limited space in the university leads to limited resources. As such, the freshmen have to look for alternatives. The activities that involve looking for alternatives are what make the concept of living in campus expensive to the students. That is while looking for the alternatives, the freshmen spend, thus making it expensive especially where the only solution to survive becomes looking for alternatives. On the university, it could be slightly costly when the university has to establish accommodation residences.

Conclusion

Universities should not require freshmen to live on campus. The reasons for this argument are substantial, and they affect the ways of life of these freshmen whose interests are supposed to be fulfilled by the university.
