The parents can primarily determine the effect and the role that the television has in a child's life. The guardian of a child should bear in mind that the contents aired by different television stations are meant for different audiences. With this in mind, they should monitor and determine what programs a child watches and the duration of exposure.Television programs can help stimulate the mind of a child. They can assist the child have a broader understanding of the world around them and even appreciate different cultures. Such programs are pro-social and add value to the life of a child. National geography is an example of an educative program. Cartoons are a source of entertainment hence, they can help a child to relax. PERSONIFICATION
On the other hand, television has several adverse effects on a child. Some programs expose children to violence. A child can either, become violent themselves, see violence as a socially acceptable norm or develop a fearful attitude towards the world by watching violent movies. 2DX The view a child takes influences their social life. Some are unable to maintain friendships or interact with peers due to their violent nature. Others fear relating with their age-mates, as they are apprehensive and expect acts of violence directed towards them. Constant exposure to the screen, especially to children who have televisions in their bedrooms can lead to obesity. The child may develop an aptitude for the junk food being advertised, and that becomes their main diet. In addition, while watching TV; the child tends to overeat. The poor eating habit leads to health complications 2CD.
Poor reading habits and poor academic performance can be attributed to a child’s increased television access. Some programs are educational, but not all and while watching TV, a child would rather watch a cartoon or movie other than watch a spelling program. Because of this, their academic work is neglected as a child would rush through their homework to go watch TV. (quote from a website)
Children of very tender age, especially those below two years do not gain much from watching TV. Exposure to it, therefore, leads to reduced development. A child at this age is required to be learning immediate world around them, playing and discovering self. The TV prevents this stage from taking place. Such a child grows having inadequate social skills.
Finally, exposure to sex at a young age is the cause of the immorality among the youths. There are several programs that have adult content EUPHEMISM, but since a child can readily access them, they learn about sexuality from the wrong platform. The programs do not provide sex education but rather increase the desire to experiment on it 2CD. The parent being the principal custodian of their children should be able to regulate the period a child spends watching the screen 2CDX. They should also control the content to which a child is exposed. In doing this, a parent can help their child reap the positive impacts of television and avoid the negative ones.
