Conflict is a normal tendency of communications with the peers and subordinates. Every person in the team has various viewpoints, and under the right set of situations, these variances accelerate to conflict. Conflict must be constructive and must be managed directly as soon as possible. It is easier to know about the beginning of a conflict in a team when the team members come up with their differences in expressions of power, morals and approaches, and social factors. However, sometimes it may be difficult to represent the causes of conflict. Communication factors, Organizational factors and Private factors are also considered as a few causes of conflict in a team.
There are various techniques to resolve and manage conflict in the teams. Few models that are used are the Dual Concern model, Holton model, and Thomas-Kilmann model. The common techniques normally begin with forcing, collaborating, compromising, withdrawing, and smoothing also known as accommodating. The techniques in Thomas-Kilmann model are competing, accommodating, avoiding, compromising, and collaborating. The process to resolve team conflicts involves discussing the situation in a respectful manner while being specific to the cause, and ensure the team understands the impact of the conflict on the project, workgroup and the organization, analyze the root cause of the issue, and decide upon a solution, and the action.
Recently, a new model has emerged from the family and community mediation tradition and has been incorporated in a few organizational dispute systems . Though all the models try to resolve a conflict, they willingly express their worries and work to find an equally favorable solution. Collaboration, as a style in these models is seen to take a lot of time compared to other conflict resolution styles, and therefore is not used on insignificant disputes as there are chances of creating more issues.
