This paper will examine the importance of utilizing the students’ perspectives to improve teaching practice. In order to achieve this it is important to examine a number of aspects. The first is why it is important for teachers to know their-selves. The second is teachers in training get feedback from many sources but not from students. Lastly, it is imperative to consider the students perspective.
It is imperative for teachers to understand themselves since it helps in the formation of an identity. According to Palmer (2009), good teaching and teachers have an excellent identity aimed at helping them to understand themselves. However, Palmer (2009) states that identity and integrity are self-discovery process that may last a lifetime (Palmer, 2009). When a teacher understands himself or herself, he or she will be able to deliver the subject matter to the student.
In training, teachers receive feedback from numerous sources but not from students. This creates an environment where teachers do not consider the opinion of students while in class. In turn, this may lead to the development of a poor or negative relationship between the teacher and the student.
According to Palme & Scribner (2007), it is important for teachers to listen to the inner teacher within the student. This is mainly because it encourages students to approach learning in a different way. This implies that it is important for teachers to take into account their student’s perspective. It helps in eliminating the need for a teacher to have students memorize facts on a specific topic without understanding. Furthermore, it helps in creating a relationship between the students and teacher. In my case, this will help me grow as a teacher since I am able to identify my teaching practice.
