At City Zoo, the head veterinarian about animal care (Dr. Tim Bernardino) had noticed issues with the animals. The top management to which he reported to did not act within the expected timeframe; this led to lack of attention on the animal’s conditions and ultimate death. Additionally, there existed a communication barrier between the zookeepers and their immediate seniors (curators). The curators were blamed of neglecting zookeepers’ pleas, forcing the latter to approach Dr. Bernardino in case they had issued to be solved.
Lack of performance appraisal measures. William Lau was the executive director in 2000; he did not incorporate performance appraisal schemes as a motivation tool for the employees. The approach he used to correct employees’ misbehavior was inappropriate since it was reported that he would shame employees in front of the others; this has a direct negative impact on workers’ morale (Caproni, pg. 324). Robert Stellenbosch, the Chief Operating Officer in 2002 had no prior experience in animal care despite his approval by the appointment committee. Dr. Wynona Singh had been noted to have communication barriers, she was however still retained within the institution. She was on call at the time the sloth bear and the giraffe died, making it crystal clear that her communication weakness had a major play in the deaths of the named animals.
Alternatives and the implementation plan
The two notable alternatives to solve the crisis in the zoo are; redefining top management roles and development of promotion strategies. The latter targets to rescue the declining public support which is valued at $6 985 750. The former is an internal focus.
Analysis and evaluation of alternatives
Since the causes of the issues stated earlier were mainly internal, a restructuring of the organization at the top would assure proper animal care. Workers with experience in a specific area should be assigned those areas and be evaluated on a regular basis (Mathis and John, pg.23). The disadvantage of this is that the variables are not predictive. Promotion on the other hand would be a shift of attention to using the mass and social media to gain public interest and confidence of the zoo. This is an expensive approach (Ryan, pg.57).
Selected alternative and implementation plan
This paper selects zoo’s promotion as the best alternative. To implement this, the organization should allocate financial resources to design of appropriate advertisement designs that captures public’s attention
