Deaf people may have lost their sense of hearing but that does not mean that they lost everything in their lives as well. The common misconception is that deaf people cannot enjoy the things that others who are not in their position can enjoy. However, it truly is a misconception because there a lot of activities, especially in our more advanced society, that deaf people can and do enjoy.
For younger deaf people, it is crucial to be able to socialize as well as have a healthy lifestyle. As such, it is imperative that they do activities outside of school. Usually, they are encouraged to do sports or attend youth clubs which usually have a mix of deaf and hearing people so that they can build relationships and social networks with other people as well as enable them to be healthy. In these cases, there a lot of activities that hearing and deaf people can participate in.
In most sports, loss of hearing is usually not a big deal. In fact, it can even help the players to focus more. Researchers say that although deaf people are more comfortable with their own kind, they usually still excel outside of their comfort zone. Some examples of sports that they particularly enjoy are swimming, bowling, football, marathon, walking, and cycling. This only proves that young deaf people can live a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle without any problem. Additionally, there are now a lot of organizations pushing for sports-related opportunities for deaf people.
Of course, it is also preferable that children in general have time to enjoy other entertainment. Some would prefer laid-back activities such as reading or watching movies while others like to be more involved so they tend to go for activities like video games. Obviously, reading is the easiest hobby for deaf people but they could easily watch movies or play video games nowadays because there are usually subtitles to go with the movie or the game.
For older deaf people within the range of 60 years old and above, it is usually best to go with activities that are fun but more laid-back than for the activities of the younger generation. For example, baking and cooking could be a good activity. Movies are okay but if they already have eye problems due to age, it would be best to have these activities at small doses so as not to strain their eyes. They could choose to watch short episodes instead of longer films.
In any case, there are a lot of activities that both the young and the old deaf people can enjoy. This article has only scratched the surface of the very big world of possibilities for deaf people, especially now that our world has become more advanced and more accommodating. Partner that with the fact that a lot of organizations are now supporting the deaf community and pushing for their rights and needs, and we can definitely see an even brighter future for deaf people.
There will always be hindrances in life. It is just a matter of what kind of hindrance was given to you. But what is important is that you do not lose hope and that you live your life believing that you are not alone and that you are not that different from everyone else.
