Fossil fuel which is the world’s largest source of energy comes with a considerable amount of problem to the world’s environment and its population. First, the cost of this type of energy is considerably high and volatile. To the environment, the emission of toxic gases that causes damage to the O-zone layer and increasing global temperatures is also a great concern. Due to these facts it is important to develop a clean renewable energy system that will compete with the fossil fuels and provide a considerable level of protection to the environment and consumers from the damage and high cost respectively (miller and Spoolman, 193, 194).
In the recent past, the globe has seen a number of catastrophic phenomena resulting from the effects of global warming and use of fossil fuels especially crude oil. Oil spills for instance has changed the composition of marine life along several kilometers of the oceans and led to the loss of job for several individuals depending on the costs and oceans for a living. The spills usually take long and a lot of resources to clean up in order to return to normalcy. Global warming on the other hand has led to increased sea levels due to the melting of ice in the polar region. The result of this warming is a drastic change in the weather patterns and potential catastrophic weather conditions. The bottom line is that the continued dependence on fossil fuels could drive the globe into a crisis that could be difficult to reverse.
In order to protect the planet for our future generations, it is essential to shift this reliance on fossil fuels and develop alternative green and renewable energy.
As explained by the former governor of Michigan, the development of green energy technology has numerous benefits both to the community and the environment at large. In her TED talk, she indicated the fact that many factories would close shop in America and open them elsewhere due to the cheap methods of doing business in those locations. As such, it is essential for policy makers to devise means to create employment and job opportunities in the energy sector. In her analysis, the amount of investment in renewable energy in the entire globe exceeds 1.6 trillion dollars. This implies that the amount of jobs that the sector generates is significant and the American government could make use of this opportunity to create jobs for the population by empowering the states through incentives (Jenifer, np).
There are several green energy technology that could effectively compete with fossil fuels and potentially reduce its impact on the environment. Sources of energy like wind power, hydroelectricity, bio-fuels, and solar power are some of the energy sources that are environmentally friendly. The use or consumption of these types of energy will have zero or no negative effect on the environment. As opposed to the consumption of carbon fuels that emit several toxic and environmental unfriendly gases that cause global warming.
The sustainability of these types of energy is another benefit that they come with. It is important to note that the use of solar energy or wind power has no effect on the environment and they cannot be depleted. Compared to the fossil fuels, there is likelihood that the fuels supply can be depleted and with a considerable cost to the environment. The use of this renewable and green energy therefore is a cheaper alternative that eliminates the worry of depletion of its reserves. Many oil exporting countries and economies fear the repercussion of the decline in supply of oil. They are slowly shifting from the dependence on oil as the major source of income and diversifying on the income generating activities and industries. This is an indication of the fact that the use of this type of energy is not sustainable in the long run (Korte, Katrin, 124).
The emissions that are generated by carbon dioxide intensive fuels are linked to a number of health problems. This includes all types of pollutions like soil water and air pollutions that are caused by the same type of fuels. The health problems that could result from the pollution include breathing problems, cancers and neurological damage. The implication on this is that there will be an increase on the expenditure on health and considerable loss of productive time (Casper, 09).
Overall, the development and use of green energy is the way to go into the future. This will help protect the environment, reduce fuel prices and improve the general public health. Different governments should work out modalities on creating this type of energy and provide frameworks for shifting from fossil fuels in order to reduce the level of emissions that arise from the fossil fuels. The only challenge to the implementation of this type of energy is the development of systems that would make it possible to use green energy like developing electric cars and shifting to these systems without affecting different economies that depend on fossil fuels. However, it is important to note that the benefits of developing green energy are far too great than the costs.
