Incidents of domestic abuse give a serious cause for concern. Being oftentimes latent, domestic conflicts tend to occur in various families, even in those that are considered to be quite respectable. Victims of domestic violence are normally hesitant to ask for help for the fear of spoiling the reputation of the family or losing their means of livelihood.
A set of measures are required to realize the problem of domestic violence and make interventions in such violent conflicts. To begin with, measures include prevention and education programs of social and psychological counselling. Furthermore, in order to intervene effectively in family violence, it is worth coordinating the efforts of various government agencies as well as improving the legal framework. Non-governmental women’s organizations play a crucial role in raising public awareness about domestic violence. They initiate the development and implementation of programs aimed at reducing the scourge of family abuse. Despite the slow nature of the changes in terms of social consciousness, coordinated efforts can bring tangible results. The role of government is to accept the relevant laws and regulations, as well as to support initiatives of NGOs, providing interaction between the state and civil structures. Non-governmental organizations can intervene in terms of development and implementation of specific programs in order to attract public attention through the media. The role of newspapers, radio and television in the fight against domestic violence cannot be overemphasized, since mass media is able to reach a wider audience, thereby prompting feedback. Thus, publication of articles, answers to letters, interviews, live performances, video and audio clips as well as charity events are bound to be effective. Besides, it should be noted that establishing hotlines and widely disseminating information about them give victims some confidence and comfort, while training programs for acquiring business skills allow women to have more economic independence.
