Importance of Work-Life Balance
The changing economic times coupled with the increasing complexities have made organizations operate on lean workforces as part of efforts aimed at ensuring profitability. As a result, most employees become loyal to the organization. Responsibilities among employees increase as they assume more roles. Eventually, they become fatigued and suffer from increased stress levels. As time progresses, the employees become dissatisfied with their roles and might be forced to seek attractive and challenging opportunities in other organizations. To retain employees, an organization must strive to offer attractive remuneration and conducive working environment. Achieving this objective requires an organization to strike a balance between the realization of organizational objectives and the welfare of employees.
The organization has the ethical responsibility to create and maintain a healthy and supportive work environment. This is crucial in order to give employees a chance to balance between personal commitment and work. In turn, this enhances employee productivity and encourages employees to become loyal to the organization. Contemporary workers have increased competing responsibilities that revolve around taking care of the family, undertaking household chores, maintaining personal relationships, and fulfilling work related issues among other responsibilities. Such responsibilities induce increased stress levels on employees.
Younger generation employees demand change in the workplace because of the increased globalization and improved innovation. Organizations should help their employees cope with conflicts that might arise from personal issues such as family responsibilities. Organizations ought to create jobs that will allow their employees to balance their work and family. This includes the creation of jobs and duties by scheduling employees to work on shifts, giving them offs, and leaves. Additionally, Seligson (2012) argues creation of flexible programs that allow employees to rest can help to make such employees committed to the organization. Research shows that organizations that have implemented work-life balance programs get the best out of their employees (Seligson, 2012).
