Steve Jobs, considered as one of America’s great innovators, built Apple Inc.--which he believed to be his most important creation. In this article by Walter Isaacson (also Jobs’ autobiographer), he identified the keys to Steve Jobs’ success. These are:
Focus: Jobs believed that “deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do.” This is his first call to order when he returned to Apple. He believed that by focusing on the top three priorities, the company can create great products, and it did.
Simplify: From Jobs Zen discipline, he developed the instinct to simply things which helps Apple attain focus. By “eliminating the clutter”, it led Apple to invent the “mouse” that enable commands by dragging and dropping, simpler user interface, even eliminating unnecessary functions such as, the use of on and off button.
Take Responsibility End to End: Jobs had a controlling personality so he took over the responsibility of what he called “the whole widget”. This meant ensuring that Apple products’ software, hardware, and peripheral are seamlessly integrated to provide superior customer experience.
When Behind, Leapfrog: As an innovative company, Jobs steered it to “leapfrog” competition when Apple it was behind in music with its iMac. This led Apple to invent iPod, and later on incorporate iTunes in its iPhone.
Put Products Before Profits: Jobs believed that making the product great, profit will follow. He taught and shared with his team his passion to make great products than focus on making profit. By doing this, Apple was able to come up with iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad.
Bend Reality: This referred to Jobs’ character of pushing people to do the impossible.
Impute: One of Jobs’ key doctrines, “Impute” speaks of the opinion that may be formed on a product through the way it was packaged or presented. This explains the meticulous way Apple products are packed.
Push for Perfection: Job’s perfectionism dominated in how all the Apple products were created. He was not satisfied until he felt everything was in perfect condition.
Tolerate only “A” Players. Jobs rationalized his rough leadership style as his way of eliminating mediocre in his team. His inspirational side though enabled him to retain his top players who were loyal to him.
Engage Face to Face: Despite digital technology, Jobs believed in meeting face-to-face. He did this by conducting regular meetings in Apple which drove his top players to create the perfect Apple products.
Know Both the Big Pictures and the Details: Jobs had the both the ability to provide the big vision and at the same time focus on the details to make things perfect.
Combine the Humanities with Science: Inspired by Edwin Land of Polaroid, Jobs was able to decipher and connect the humanities side to science of his technological inventions.
Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish: This philosophy which he found at the back of a magazine during his hippie days, formed his character throughout his career. His rebelliousness and being nonconformist set him apart, which he imparted to Apple.
