Part 1. Behavior is any specific response of human beings any organism towards a specific r group of stimulus. This form of reaction can either be influenced by the environment where the person lives or it can be a learned process. Human beings behave in very many different and varied ways when there is a change of stimulus in their environment. According to Miller, (2006), there are two main reasons why human beings behave the way they behave. The first reason human behaves in one way, or the other is to achieve biologically motivated goals which include food, sex, water and reasonable environment. These are basic and physiological needs which any human being will long to have. According Abraham Maslow pyramid of human needs, food and sex are some of the needs Maslow ranks as the key in any human beings life and one will do anything possible in achieving them. The second reason people engage in behavior according Miller, (2006) is because of the pursuit of all that which is not necessary for survival. In this case, person will try to get personal favors from people who will make them behave either in an outstanding or on the contrary way. These factors according to Miller includes search of knowledge, advancement or praise.
Personally my husband use to reward my first born by taking him out for shopping and at times for movies whenever he performed well in school. It went on for a long time as the boy was growing, and his performance was always improving. Things started changing when the boy was twelve years old. His performance started deteriorating, and he did not prefer his dad taking him out whenever he did well anymore. It could have been because the boy had grown, and the motivation or the reinforcement that he was getting was not appropriate for him. He considered going out with his friends rather than in his presence of his father. In using reinforcement, I would recommend that the support does not seem monotonous to the person being motivated. It is because when they become familiar with what to expect the motivation of the support is lost since there is no more curiosity. A stronger reinforcement should be given as time lapses to motivate the behavior. It is because unless the person being motivated is interested in the reinforcement being offered then it cannot motivate them towards behavior change (Miller, 2006). Part 2. According to Miller, 2006, there are four principles of an effective reinforce which includes contingency, immediacy, size constancy, and depression. Contingency according to Miller is a way of intervention in decreasing undesirable behavior while on the other hand increasing the required behavior. In this case, a child may be told to finish her homework in order to watch television.
Immediacy on the hand is defined by Miller as the ability of a teacher in a classroom situation or a counselor to utilize the immediate situation of their clients or their students. In this case, the instructor or the teacher are brought closer together in terms of perceived distance. These factors may include smiling and even calling students by name (Miller, 2006). Size constancy as another reinforce a way of perception of objects and things in the same way and experience even though they have a broad range of their observation conditions. Finally, deprivation is a way of preventing someone prom accessing things they need or want for a given period in order to cause behavior change (Miller, 2006)
One of my friends was working in a company where the manager decided to be giving a special gift after every two weeks and an increment of salary after 3 months by 10% for employees who demonstrated excellence in their work throughout. It was meant to make the company which had been blamed for poor services change the behavior of the employees and also motivate them to deliver their best. The trend started very well, and the employees were happy but with time they retracted to their normal performance. It was as a result of unfairness in the gifts that the manager was giving. He did not have a set standard which he used in giving the gift thus people would compare their gifts and feel that they were not treated fairly since some gifts were more expensive than others. It made the approach to fail in changing the behavior of the employees who even saw the manager as an unfair leader (Miller, 2006).
