A geographic approach, by definition, is a method or technique of research or problem solving that integrates geographic information to arrive at intended conclusions. A geographic approach is similar to a mathematical or statistical method, only that the data used in the analysis is purely geographical in nature. The method involves the measurement, analysis, and processing of geographic data for various purposes. A geography approach to a country is, for this reason, a technique that is used to solve a problem or to gather information, through the use of geographic data for that country. This paper describes what a geographic approach to the study of China entails.
A geographic approach to the study of China involves the use of geographic data in order to study China. The geographic data that a researcher should look for includes the physical features present in China such as mountains, waterfalls, rivers, craters, water bodies such as lakes among other aspects. The researcher should also consider the study of vegetation in China and various soil types, the types and directions of the wind, solar intensity of China and general topography of the country (Veeck 2011). A geographic approach is different from other disciplines such as a historical approach that would focus more on the culture of the Chinese population, their languages and their migration patterns all over the country. A geographic approach tends to focus more on natural factors rather than human factors (McClain & Du 2013). A geographic approach is similar to approaches in other disciplines because the data is often analyzed using the same statistical methods regardless of the disciplines. It provides a point of convergence between various approaches to the study of China.
A geographic approach to the study of China calls for adequate preparation with all necessary equipment, proper planning of research and visiting China to get primary data in the country. Geographic approaches should not rely heavily on secondary data but should budget for trips in order to collect primary data that is more credible.
