Marijuana is one of the most commonly used illegal drug in the United States. While there some states that have legalized marijuana, the government is faced with a difficult decision on whether to fully legalize marijuana. Marijuana is sold illegally and it one of the most common illegal drugs to buy. Regardless of how many years marijuana has been branded as illegal, the sale of the drug has not diminished. The general public is torn between decisions on whether to support the legalization of the drug and there are people who oppose. Marijuana has been branded as a health drug for patients suffering from a particular disease and there are people who use it for recreational purposes or religious purposes. So, with a popular drug like marijuana and its high sales and its worldwide use, the government should capitalize on the advantage on legalizing it to help the economy. Legalizing marijuana will bring economic and financial benefits as well as reducing health risks compared to other drugs.
First, legalizing marijuana will bring economic benefits to the United States. In the past years, the government spends money to take out drug gangs and drug dealers selling marijuana. The government has spent millions of dollars on busting drug dealers all over the country. The legalization of marijuana in the United States will bring economic opportunities because it is the most popular and high grossing illegal drug on the street. Legalizing marijuana will provide jobs to sellers and can be sold in places such as grocery stores and local stores. The government will no longer spend unnecessary funding on trying to stop drug dealers and bust drug gangs. Marijuana has many customers and as much as it is opposed will not change the fact that marijuana will bring some economic benefits. “Replacing marijuana prohibition with a system of legal regulation would save approximately $7.7 billion in government expenditures on prohibition enforcement — $2.4 billion at the federal level and $5.3 billion at the state and local levels” (Miron, 2014) .The revenues made from legalizing marijuana is estimated to be between $10 billion and $14 billion annually. This money can be used to focus on other pressing concerns of the country such as national debts or providing employment.
Secondly, marijuana can be used to cure diseases. Marijuana has been declared as medicine for curing diseases such as glaucoma, epileptic seizures, prevents cancer from spreading and many other health benefits (Loria, 2014). Marijuana helps prevent diseases in both children and adults. Marijuana helps reverse lung disease obtained from smoking tobacco. People who use marijuana have a lower risk of getting lung diseases compared to people who smoke tobacco. Also, marijuana being branded as a medicine by doctors and health researchers gives credibility to the drug as having more importance beyond being used for only recreational purposes. There are positive effects of using marijuana not only as a recreational drug, but to help cure devastating diseases such as cancer, eye diseases, epilepsy seizure controls and many other diseases. Legalizing marijuana can help save lives and if it is branded as illegal then using it for medicinal purposes will also be illegal.
Finally, marijuana has less health risks compared to tobacco and alcohol. Tobacco is legalized and it can be used in public. Many people do not like tobacco being smoked in public areas but because it has been legalized those opinions are silenced. People who smoke tobacco are exposed to lung diseases, skin disease and gum diseases. People who smoke tobacco have serious health issues and find it difficult to quit easily. The risks of people dying from smoking tobacco is higher compared to people who smoke marijuana. Alcohol is another killer substance compared to marijuana. Alcohol is legalized and there are many people who sell alcohol to minors but they are not being hunted down compared to people selling marijuana. Alcohol leads to domestic violence, lung diseases, liver diseases, swelling of body parts and many other side effects. Alcohol and tobacco are very dangerous and even worse when combined, yet, marijuana has been on the radar of disapproval by many people. Marijuana has its side effects, but they are not as serious as the health risks caused by tobacco and alcohol (Nelson, 2012).
Marijuana has side effects, people get high after smoking it, but looking beyond that it has other benefits. Legalizing marijuana will help save billions of dollars compared to its prohibition. According to studies, the legalization of marijuana has reduced violence and crime rate significantly. Legalizing marijuana also help the economy when it’s sold in grocery stores. Marijuana is one the highest bought drugs and legalizing it will help account for that money to improve society. The medicinal function of marijuana also helps it claims to why it should be legalized. If marijuana is illegal in the United States, then doctors cannot use it to cure cancer, glaucoma and other diseases. Considering the fact that other harmful substances such as tobacco and alcohol are sold publicly, makes it legitimate for marijuana to be sold publicly as well. Tobacco and alcohol cause more health risks compared to marijuana. Marijuana should be legalized in the United States because it has more health benefits not only to recreational user’s, but also to people who are suffering from diseases. The legalization of marijuana will have positive impact on the country.
