Contemporary society demands that businesses not only turn a profit, they must also give back to society in other ways. Companies that have social responsibility and/or philanthropy projects attract better employees, people who are interested in making the world a better place. It also helps with sales. People are more inspired to buy products from a company who uses some profit to help society. There are three options worth pursuing for our company’s social responsibility and/or philanthropy project: Habitat for Humanity, the Wounded Warriors Project and Scholarship Funds for those in need.
The first option would be to partner with Habitat for Humanity. This non-profit builds healthy, affordable homes for people. Building affordable homes for people helps communities and it gives children a safe place to grow up in. There are two options for this project. We could partner with Habitat for Humanity and have volunteers from our company help build a house or we could make a donation. If we chose the first option, we could pay our employees their regular wage while they do the volunteer work so it won’t create unnecessary hardship on them. If we chose to donate an amount we could either put aside a percentage of profits for a specific period of time or we could collect donations from the employees.
The Wounded Warriors Project is a non-profit that helps veterans get back on their feet. Whether the wounds are psychological, physical or both veterans can go to Wounded Warriors for help. In a similar vein to Habitat for Humanity, we could either partner with Wounded Warriors by sending volunteers to help in whatever way is needed or we could donate money to their cause. Again, we would pay the volunteers their regular wages.
The last option is we could donate money to a scholarship fund that is already in existence or we could create our own. We could create a scholarship that is named after the company and provide the scholarship to a high school senior who writes an essay on why a career in business in helpful to society. Perhaps we could limit the scholarship entries to only students whose family makes below a certain amount per year, we would want to make sure the money is used by a student who really needs it.
The best option for our company will be to partner with Habitat for Humanity. We had the company’s employees take a survey to identify what would motivate them the most and the overwhelming answer was helping to build a house in the community. It seems people would rather donate their time than their money, actually doing something to help people is more inspiring than just throwing money at them. There was some interest in the Wounded Warrior Project but we don’t have a high population of people with military connections working for us so it wasn’t as appealing as building a house. The other benefit to choosing to partner with Habitat for Humanity to build a house is that we can take pictures of the process and put them on the website. The pictures will lure good employees who see that we are doing work in the community – and having fun while we do it. Plus we can use it as a marketing tool – we can talk about how part of our profits go to paying wages for the time our employees spend giving back to the community on our website and in commercials. Depending on how we do with or quarterly goals we could also donate money to the cause. We could provide volunteers, pay employees for their time and invest in some of the materials needed to build the house. Once the house is ready for people to move it we could schedule a time for all the employees to meet the family who will be moving in to the house to bring the experience full circle. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity will be the best option for our social responsibility and philanthropy project.
If all else fails, a good alternative would be the establishment of matching funds. Basically, matching funds are basically funds that are set (often in the form of ratio) to be paid by an individual or an organization that is equal in amount to another fund that is available from another source which may also be an individual or an entire organization. In this case, the most applicable type of matching funds would be a corporate-employee matching fund. In a corporate-employee matching fund setting, the corporation would often agree to pay a certain amount (depending on the ratio of equivalency) of fund as a form of donation based on the total amount of funds that its employee or employees have donated. Suppose the ratio is 1:1. If the total donated fund of the employees was 1 million USD, then the corporation, by virtue of matching funds, would be obliged to donate 1 million USD as well. Basically, matching funds help by somehow forcing corporations to compete against a certain entity when it comes to giving to charity. As far as organizational considerations are concerned, this program may indeed be applicable to the current company as long as the matching fund ratios are analyzed carefully.
