The Social Network is a movie based on Facebook, the ultimate social networking site for the present day. The movie is based on the invention of Facebook, the cause behind it and what struggles and lawsuits it went through to become the success it is today. The main character of the movie is the creator of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and his friends who support him in the making of the website.
In the movie, the invention of Facebook is purely coincidental, where it is made in the dorm of Harvard by Zuckerberg who was initially retaliating against his girlfriend and misused girl’s pictures by creating Facemash after he hacks into the college’s computer database and takes out those pictures. After getting caught in his act, later he is discovered by two upper class twins at Harvard, the Winklevosses who choose Zuckerberg to work with him on Harvard Connection which would be a social networking site for Harvard students intended for dating. Once he agrees to work with them, Zuckerberg reached his friend Eduardo Saverin after an idea for a website called TheFacebook that he wished to expand to other universities. When TheFacebook was successful, they decided to expand it to other universities with heavy investments. The phrase ‘Facebook me’ became catchy, and soon the ‘The’ was eliminated and the name of the site was reduced to Facebook. Zuckerberg and his company faced certain lawsuits for thieving the idea posed by Winklevoss twins. However, after going through much trouble with his co-founder and bearing the burden of his own callous behavior, Zuckerberg finally comes to terms with his predicament and settles his disputes with everyone and runs Facebook as the CEO and remains the world’s youngest billionaire.
The success factors of Facebook are quite a handful, and they are the reason of this social networking site being the most popular one today. The first would be the invention of it that it was never built from a purely business point of view; Zuckerberg came up with it in his dorm. And then he never asked a multiple numbers of people to whether putting this up on a social networking site would be a good idea or not. The site was launched as soon as it was made, and that was it.
The other reason why it was successful was because of its timely execution. Zuckerberg got the idea and simply put it into action, which is what he also tells the Winklevosses in the movie that had they invented Facebook; they would have invented Facebook.
In its older form TheFacebook was rapidly popular among students since it was aimed at doing one thing at a time and not multitasking so as to ruin the one function it would well perform. This made the site an efficient one in operation and then gradually its various features were built upon, and its features got enhanced and widened.
Facebook was successful since it managed the number of people who could create accounts as compared to other social networking sites like MySpace, Friendster and the like, who crashed since they could not manage their number of users. Facebook added one school at a time in its early days, and so it always worked, never slowed down or stopped working.
Zuckerberg’s intentions to run the site were purely for social interests and benefits and not only business and money. He kept the business secondary and focused on his product. He also remained in charge of Facebook no matter what he faced and did not let short term profits get in the way of long term success. Adding newer features, bringing innovation and inculcating new ideas naturally attracted the masses and ultimately Facebook became a huge success.
