Introduction:

Art education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia began in 1947 after the approval of the first plan of the curriculum. It was a basic part of every stage of the education system and was taught as an activity rather than as a subject. Documents are available to confirm this fact. This paper seeks to establish a curriculum that will spur learning for school going children in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Initial introduction of art education faced strong opposition from hardline Islamic scholars and clerics who felt that drawing of God’s creation was going against the teachings of Islam and wanted it not to be taught in the kingdom. However, the officials were not convinced by this assertion and tried to explain that art was not all about photography but also as a means of expression for the learners and their test for the aesthetic values in nature. King Abdul Aziz due to his desire to implement the enacted education plans rejected the critics’ protests.
Currently students and parents alike do not appreciate art education due to its inadequate teaching style and evaluation standards. More so, parents feel that the subject does not add value to the lives of the students. Due to this growing concern I feel organizers of the curriculum development in Saudi Arabia need to treat art education like other subjects. An all-round program should be developed to reflect the student’s personality. This program can be developed by analyzing past studies on public education. My project will try fix the above inadequacies in art education by developing a curriculum that will help develop student knowledge.

Saudi Arabia
Art education in Saudi Arabia should start from the formative years of a child as it is a vital part of the child’s development. Early exposure to colors aid in forming the cognitive connection between visual signs and words. In this project I will classify colors into primary, secondary and tertiary. I will also explain the materials needed to teach these colors to students.
First, primary colors are colors that cannot be created by mixing other colors. Furthermore this colors are mixed to create new colors. The primary colors are red, blue and yellow.
Secondly, one gets a secondary color as a result of mixingtwo or more primary colors. For instance, a mixture of red and blue forms purple color, red and yellow forms orange and green is formed by a mixture of yellow and blue colors. The proportion of colors mixed determines type of color formed. For example, if you add more red than yellow, you get a reddish orange, and if you add more yellow than red, you get a yellowish orange.
With this knowledge of colors, one is able to easily know how to identify different sets of colors and how to effectively use them in artwork.If this knowledge is not available and acquired by the artist, it may be difficult to come up with good artwork. Hence, knowledge of colors forms the basis of any art education. My curriculum will, therefore, add valuable knowledge to the learners and ensure that they do well in arts.

The main purpose of teaching primary and secondary colors for kindergarten and first grade pupils in Saudi Arabia:

One of the main purposes of teaching primary and secondary colors to children is to help them familiarize themselves with the environment around them. Color is everywhere in these children’s existence. By teaching colors, these children are better placed to understand and fit into their physical environment. The other purpose is to build their competence in their knowledge of things. A child who understands colors and how to form them illustrates how much knowledgeable they are in terms of competence. Further, the idea of teaching primary and secondary colors helps in imparting art skills to these children. In so doing, some of these children will be interested in art and when they grow up, they can pursue art as a profession. The other purpose is to nurture talent in these children even as they grow. Amongst them, there could be a few that are talented in drawing and artwork. By giving them the knowledge of colors, their budding talents could be nurtured and enhanced. This can be achieved by engaging the children in constant repetition, and by using learning aides that link colors to things. For example, blue can be said to represent the sky.
After the children have mastered the art of language teaching them color becomes much easier as there is a mode of communication. This is further aided by their attraction to bright colors and their ordinaryattractionto understand their surroundings.After that, teaching colors to children is usually easy. Use of day to day examples for instance toys in teaching colors helps the learner to grasp the concept of colors. Due to the importance of color recognition to children development many tools have been developed for use by educators and parents in teaching color to children.

Objectives ofteaching primary, secondary, colors for kindergarten first grade in

Saudi Arabia:
My curriculum has set out to achieve various objectives. One of the objectives is to impart knowledge to students on how to identify and memorize information. At the end of the curriculum, learners should be able to show how much they have learnt. This can be tested by asking learners to identify various colors with what they can remember. The second learning objective will be comprehension. Teaching colors will also help learners to comprehend, organize and selects facts and ideas. This will be exhibited in their ability to organize different colors according to the specified color classifications. Finally, the third objective will be based on the application of knowledge. The curriculum will help students learn to apply the learnt facts, rules and principles in everyday situations.For instance, learners will be helped to identify colors of various items in their neighborhood, (such as trees and cars). In so doing, the curriculum aims to produce students that are all-rounded. It will also build their competence in handling real life situations in and out of school.

Teaching Strategies:

Children, especially those in kindergarten and first grade, tend to lose concentration easily. This, therefore, calls for the need to have an interesting plan for the learners. Such a plan will not only teach the colors but will also help learners to have fun even as they learn. The first strategy in my curriculum development project is the use art and painting videos, color painting books, color wheels and captivating optical illusion photos. Secondly, the accompaniment of music during art lesson will not only make it fun for learners but also help them memorize the concepts. Finally, letting the children explore and implementing what they have learnt through the tutorial and classwork will inculcate their love for color.

Evaluation

After the implementation of the curriculum students should be evaluated on their understanding of the concepts of color. Through this test teachers and students alike will know what areas to improve on. Testing of primary colors should be done by using a wheel color, a rainbow or a picture with multiple colors, the students will be asked to identify the different primary colors and naming them.
Finally students will have to put whatever they have learnt into practice. Students will have to mix different water colors to come up with secondary colors. This experimentation tests the students’ recognition of colors and helps them have a first-hand experience of colors and their attributes. In so doing, cognition and communication skills of the learners will be enhanced given that learners will be in a better position to express themselves. Further, colors form part of the learner’s daily life activities. By being able to identify things in based on the colors, their lives and interaction with their environment will be easier.

Conclusion

Color is a very essential part of our every day to day life and hence its knowledge is paramount tour daily activities. Ranging from choice of dress, color of our building, machinery and everything in life. With the right knowledge of the different aspects of color one can come up with a combination of aesthetic pleasing surroundings. Finally, study of art is not only a subject but also a well-paying profession. When the learners grow up, they will be able to make use of their skills as a source of livelihood.
