An effective leader must first and foremost have a harmonious relationship with his subordinates. However over time, there will be instances when this relationship can break down and create an unfavorable working environment. There are many reasons why this breakdown can occur. A major cause is when the goals of the leader is not aligned with the goals of his followers. When this happens, a relationship crisis occurs which is manifested in low morale and low productivity. Another main barrier in a smooth leader-follower relationship is a lack of communication between both parties. Minimum or no interaction and feedback between a leader and his subordinates result in an attitude of mistrust and cynicism which will definitely damage the relationship .
There are several things that must be avoided by leaders if they want to remain effective. A Harvard Business Review article, “Which Behaviors Must Leaders Avoid?” enumerates actions which leaders must try to avoid. One behavior which creates damage in the leader-follower relationship is the use of judgmental, non-verbal language by the leader. An example of this is when a leader gives a mocking look to a subordinate whose opinion he does not totally agree with. Another behavior that must be avoided by a leader is the act of interrupting and interrogating. Effective communication with one’s follower is impossible if a leader does not allow his subordinates to speak their minds. Leaders who do not know how to listen to his subordinates will have followers who are not motivated. Lastly, a leader who is inconsistent in his behaviors will not earn the respect of his followers .
An effective and efficient leader-follower relationship does not happen overnight. Leaders play a significant role in this bond. They must be open and willing to change their attitudes and behaviors, if they impact negatively on their relationship with their followers.
