There is no doubt that personality has a significant influence on an individual’s performance and more so, the way they react to different situations in the workplace. In nursing, the personality of a nurse plays a crucial role in shaping how they relate to their peers, patients, and the administration. Emotional intelligence (EI), the ability to manage not only self but also other people’s emotions, has become an important attribute of one’s personality (Harms & Crede, 2010). EI is becoming exceptionally significant in the organizational setting because EI principles help in understanding or assessing people’s behaviors. On top of the other personality attributes, EI plays a vital role in shaping the behavior of nurses in the organizational setting (Smith, Ciarrochi & Heaven, 2008).
Firstly, I can categorically state that I’m an extrovert. People with this personality have easiness in engaging with the outside world (Carlson, 2010). People with this personality trait enjoy being with others, are energetic, and they always exhibit positivity. As a nurse, this trait is vital. I have realized that I bond well with patients and colleagues. The majority of patients that I handle admit that the positivity that I exhibit plays an integral role in their healing process. Secondly, I’m agreeable. This personality trait helps people get along with others. People with this trait are considerate, helpful, generous, friendly, and are often ready to compromise their interests with others’ (Carlson, 2010). As a nurse, possessing this trait has had a huge impact on how I relate to patients and my colleagues at work. It helps me during decision-making processes or team building occasions. Those who partner with me are always glad to have teamed up with a cooperative and helpful person. Thirdly, I possess excellent conscientiousness. While working in a nursing setting, there are many instances where our impulses are influenced, but the manner in which we react relies on our personality. I’m happy that on top of having solid emotional intelligence, I’m also a highly conscientious person. Additionally, I’m an open person who does not conceal anger or hatred. Whenever something annoys me, I always seek to find solace in the shortest time possible; I do not let occurrences distort my mood or behavior.
In the nursing sector, nurses are bound to encounter different distressing moments. There is pressure from different angles. On one hand, patients expect nurses to be there and take care of them in times of distress; they expect nurses to be understanding, friendly and helpful. But nurses are also human beings and are not perfect. However, those that have a solid EI, are agreeable, extroverts, and highly conscientious tend to navigate past these challenges with ease. These attributes affect nurses’ communication styles, work relations, and decision-making. Nurses must possess leadership qualities because they are leaders in their respective duties. As they go about their daily duties, they have to make sound and independent decisions at some point.
In summary, it can be argued that nursing is a challenging profession that calls for nurses with exceptional leadership skills. Nurses have to be sound decision makers and problem solvers. In line with this, those who possess solid EI and have positive personality attributes are likely to function well in the clinical setting.
