Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram have continuously soared in the past couple of years as instrument by individuals as well as public and private entities as a means of communication and dissemination of information. These internet-based media evolve based on the Web 2.0, a component of digital media industry. Web 2.0 tool, also known as the new media, refers to on-demand contents that are usually available through the World Wide Web or the Internet. Aside from social media model, Web 2.0 implementation include video, music, blog marketing, personal blogs, maps and websites called mash ups, avatars or uploading of personal image and other corporate blogs. Any tools based on this digital component are accessible through different digital devices and usually incorporates creative participation of the users as well as users feedback. These technologies that use the Web 2.0 component are normally dense, controlled, networkable, interactive and compressible. Wikipedia is a classic example of a digital media composed of video with URL links, allows imaginative participation of users, permits development of groups or forums, digital text and interactive feedback. This tool generally provides a collaborative platform that allows the users to dictate the requirements for open source APIs as well as to new web services that makes Web 2.0 more powerful as an Internet-based media.
Being a collaborative technology, the focus of Web 2.0 are the users or the collaborators. The collaborators manage and control the creation of the content and included services in a platform, including the creation of different kind of information on the web with the liberty of manipulating the services that they want to avail over the web. This kind of behavior is prevalent among Facebook, podcast, blogs and even RSS feeds. With the volunteered information in the web site, collaborators can easily socialize by sharing information among the public or restrict viewing and responding to information among selected group of networks. More than communicating of information, such kind of digital media component allows electronic commerce, thus, emulating an online business via the Web 2.0 tools. The usage of this media component empowers different internet media types as it permits integration with several functions and working together with service offerings. The advent of Web 2.0 discourages the usage of traditional proprietary APIs as such technology restrained interoperability among different technology functions and mobility among services. In the world of digital media arena, open source and standard APIs are becoming popular as it encourage supportive environment for development and elimination of barriers in application development. Most of the APIs used in the Web 2.0 utilizes different programming languages including, but not limited to, Ruby, XML and PHP. These programming languages are more intuitive and simple language, and thus, this permits quick rollout process and collaborative improvement of various services and applications.
While there are incessant increase in the usage of this digital media component, Web 2.0 has become an instrument to establish more open communication among the individuals in different parts of the world via the Internet. This kind of media shortens the gap and the distance between people all over the world that communication become instant anytime anywhere using any digital devices. Creation of virtual communities become possible online, hence, this goes beyond limitation in terms of geographical locations. Through these communities, planning, conducting business, brainstorming or even finding someone to fall in love with become viable. It has been apparent that there is an obvious globalization of communication via this kind of technology; however, this also receives criticisms among different sectors because such kind of technology challenges and changes the real human relationship between the media, the government and the public. Similarly, this new media has become a tool and an avenue for advocating social change. Some non-profit organizations are taking advantage of the social media takes advantage of the availability and accessibility of social media to develop grassroots globalization. Other people also view the social media as a mechanism for implicating democracy with information. One of the recent and became famous use of social media trend is the Ice Bucket Challenge. The social media proved to become a very effective device for such campaign for raising funds for ALS or the so-called Lou Gehrig’s disease. Participants use the social media, either Facebook or Instagram, to nominate their friends to shower a bucket of ice to experience the actual feeling of an ALS patient, otherwise, donate money to the ALS Foundation. On the other hand, some extremist or radical groups also utilize and ride on the popularity of the new media to carry out global espionage. Among the well-liked media that these extremist used are Twitter and Facebook where they divulge personal information or upload and disseminate videos that capture their violent activities and behavior. Such case is a classic example where the popularity of the Web 2.0 technology is not an advantage, but rather, a threat to the national security. The digital media industry also gains huge recognition in various industries especially in the field of marketing and advertising. Introduction and dissemination of products and services information via the Internet has become a household component. This tool has become very effective in terms of obtaining new ideas, concepts and participation from the public.
In totality, the introduction of the Web 2.0 has its shares of advantages and disadvantages. As the technology continuously evolves, the general public needs to become conscious of its impact to their daily lives and should set boundaries on how these progressive discoveries control their daily lives.
