The Influence of the Renaissance on Early Modern Education

There are many influences from the European Renaissance on early modern education. Humanism as a philosophy held the mankind was important in his own right. The Divine was not of importance. Intellectualism, beauty, art and science became more important than the Church. Early modern education continue to teach these same subjects 500 years later. Modern public schools do not teach religion, they are established on a humanist base. As important as education was to the intellects and powerful of the Renaissance, only the privileged had access to an education. This was achieved through private tutors and schools. Education took different forms in the various geographic areas of Europe.

The intellectuals and philosophers of the time were interested in and influenced by the Ancient Greeks, whose influence is still evident in more modern educational practices. What was the value of education in society at that time?

Paintings like “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp” by Rembrandt and the discoveries of Galileo Galilei have proven to be good starting points.
