Jesus utilized “son of man” trying to show the power that they had been granted. Son of man is seen to have authority over the Sabbath unlike what is depicted (Sadler). Jesus uses this to address to all human beings to show that they can control the Sabbath but not the Sabbath to control human beings. So by utilizing this title He means human beings. When Jesus says that “Son of Man is the lord of Sabbath”, He means that humans are greater than the Sabbath day and therefore can control it. Man can do whatever they want on Sabbath. From the books of (Mt. 12:1-8; Mk. 2:23-28; Lk. 6:15) the books state that the disciples were hungry and started plucking and eating grain. The Pharisees condemned this and said that it was unlawful. Jesus, however, told them that it was not as they could control Sabbath, but not the Sabbath to control them leaving them suffering.
No, my understanding has not changed. This is because my understanding is still because man is greater than the Sabbath. They can control the Sabbath and do activities that are for their own good (Frymer & Tikva). My understanding is still the same. Jesus was challenging the laws that had been set for the Sabbath day (Notley). They restricted people from accessing commodities such as food as it is seen in the case. Jesus wanted the Pharisees to know that man was the one who could control the Sabbath and they could pick food and eat it even though human law claimed that it was unlawful. From the statement in Matt 12:5, “something greater than the temple is here”, he meant to show that humans are greater than the temple. The faith that was in humans is what mattered (Walck).
