The age of reason is the era when philosophers believed in God but emphasized on human reason. The philosophers such as Benjamin franklin, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson are known to have contributed to the doctrines. Paine supports the doctrine that no beliefs should be accepted unless they are reason oriented. To him, theology was nothing (Burgess, 185). Franklin agrees with the doctrine that science and reason can lead humanity to state of earthly perfections. He credits moral science referring it as way of improving human life. Jefferson supports that enlightenment is the guarantee of a good life. Due to reforms, the doctrines have been adjusted to fit today’s dynamics. This is accredited to the continued improvement in religion and education guiding the everyday life of the normal citizen. For instance, the scientific progress is indeed leading the globe to perfection.
Olaudah was met by a loathsome stench on boarding the ship. Breathing was difficult due to the overcrowding and hot climate which made many die. The slaves were chained and denied food. Wheatley phillis experience was different from that of Olaudah. Phillis does not give a detailed experience while in the ship. When Olaudah landed in Barbados, he did not get a buyer immediately but continued with the voyage. Phillis was bought by Wheatley family who treated her as their own and paid for her freedom. Phillis become a poet whereas Olaudah became abolitionist. Phillis seems to support slavery as evidenced by her poem to Cambridge University where she wrote that she was brought to safety from dark abodes. However, Olaudah in his writing campaigns against slavery arguing that there is no difference between them and their masters.
