The constitution and the bill of rights provides an excellent ethical guide for government employees, public servants and elected official. This is attributable to the fact that the constitution provides a guideline outlining the expected ethical behavior that should be exhibited by a public official. However, the constitution is not always clear with regard to what it expects from public officials, therefore, may be open to different interpretations. This is one of the most important ethical guidelines since it helps to ensure that government officials operate ethically and within the law. It is imperative since it helps in ensuring that they do not abuse their office or utilize their positions in order to enrich themselves (Kennedy, & Schultz, 2011).
Furthermore, it is important since it helps public officials make better decisions especially when faced by problems. It is the nature of a public official’s job for an individual to find themselves in dilemma situations. In such situations, a government official will find himself or herself stuck between different opinions on how to address an issue. This makes ethical decision making an integral part of an official’s work.
In the constitution and bill or rights, it is required that when making choices public servants must ensure that they embrace ethical decision-making. Ethical decision making mainly involves making choices that are fair and nonpartisan. This implies making decisions that are in line with safeguarding public opinions and interests (Kennedy, & Schultz, 2011). Furthermore, when most public officials take office they are required to take an oath that affirms their commitment to uphold ethical behavior as well as the constitution. Therefore, they are bound by the oath to uphold the constitution and serve the public without prejudice or favor.
