Thesis; Book banning and censorship in schools limits the education of the students

For a long time, America has been recognized for its freedom of speech and its competition of literacy. However, there is an unknown problem that is dramatically growing across all states; book banning in schools and libraries. It could be very hard to believe that book banning takes place in a nation with freedom of speech and expression as a right stated in the constitution. Despite this, it is evident that censorship is taking place in almost all schools all over the country. It is very saddening that parents are in the frontline and the steering force to the book banning in schools all over the country. This banning and censorship of books in schools have a great impact to the students’ educations since it limits resources available for research and other learning. The banning and censorship usually leave learners with limited and vague images of the different historical occurrences, values and challenges of their culture.
Often, writers usually depict their culture in their writings or even analyze a specific culture within the society. As a result of censorship and book bans, high number of writers are ignored or not completely represented into public schools. Censorship has dramatically grown as a result of concerned parents not wanting their children so much exposed into world perspective by that of their own. The key reasons why parents advocate for book banning include evocative language, violence, sexuality, religion and controversial historical situations such as slavery. Censorship and book banning can have a huge impact to learning since students luck exposure into world wider perspective. This leads to poor understanding of different cultural diversities. For instance if books such as Uncle Tom’s Cabin are banned in schools, where will student learn about topic on slavery. Therefore, if banning and censorship continues, student will lack critical information necessary for their studies and development. Continued banning means that instead, of learning from books and assistance from teachers, student will access such information from inferior sources such as TVs, peers and internet.
