An adept writer can effectively inform his intended audience by incorporating external sources into his or her work. Valuable information from speeches and results of extensive research by other parties are included in the work. The ideas and styles of expression from other original sources are cited in the text to expound on the topic of study. The references from credible sources make the writer`s written presentation more convincing to the reader. Writers also cite information from renowned leaders and successful people to strengthen their argument. Readers are more interested in facts and findings from proven researchers. Writers can use the following means to add information from outside sources to their work.
Quotation is the most commonly used integration strategy. It refers to use of exact words of a source such as a text or speech. The writer repeats original content and credits it to the author or speaker. The writer carefully selects ideas and manner of expression worth quoting to include in his work. This ensures that they retain relevance to the topic of study. Special conditioning in quoting allows the writer to juggle in different ways of presenting quoted speeches or text. The writer can choose to omit certain words without altering the intended meaning, or add comments to expound on the quoted text. In most cases, quoting involves citing the source of information and thus credits the source.
A summary which represents a brief version of a text in a book or a journal is another way of including other individual`s idea. Only major explanations and ideas are picked from the source text and included in the writer`s work. This has the advantage of reducing time required to go through the text since the reader can grasp the major points from the summary. A summary also gives an overview on what is contained in the entire text and helps the reader gain interest. A good example is book cover summaries that inform the reader on the content or storyline of the books. Summary reduces bulk of information by filtering the ideas that are relevant to the study topic.
The writer also uses paraphrasing as a tool for integrating information that is already available from secondary sources. Paraphrasing involves restatement and new format presentation of ideas from an external source. When paraphrasing a book, the author`s basic points are considered. A paraphrase reflects the format of the original copy but is different in its wording. The writer can choose to capture main ideas of a good speech that is relevant to the topic of discussion. They paraphrase the speech to avoid the monotony of word to word phrasing, and deliver their ideas in a precise presentation. The paraphrasing further enables a writer to avoid plagiarism which is pinpointed as an offence in the literal world.
The inclusion of information from other reference sources enriches the presentation made by the writer. Quoting, paraphrasing and making a summary are effective methods of incorporating knowledge from credited sources into the text work. In the case of a statistical case study, results of previous researches on the topic are included in the new work for comparison purpose. This supports the writer`s argument and expounds on the topic. The readers can gain insight on the study topic by researching on the cited sources that have been included in the presentation. By doing this the readers can ultimately more insight on a writer’s position in a paper. There are cases where the sources of information that has been imported into the work are cited. This is coherent with international law for crediting the owners of the ideas and expression formats.
