Reaction Summary

“Requiem for a Dream” by Darren Aronofsky is an American psychological drama movie released in 2000. This movie is representing different forms of addiction and over-indulgence leading to the delusion as well as reckless desperation of characters subsequently overpowered by reality. It is also showing that one kind of addiction can lead to other forms of addiction. It has a good level of entertainment value as well as educational value as the message in the movie goes straight to the heart. Important points of the movie include the consumption of mind, body as well as soul by drug usage. Addictions to drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and diet pills result in an uncontrolled life taking everything away from the life of the addict.
In the movie, four different Coney Island people are shown to have strong addiction for drugs. The main character Harry Goldfarb has been represented as typical heroin junky having an ambitious plan of “Getting off hard knocks,” along with his girlfriend Marion Silver, who is also cocaine crazy, and his long time friend Tyrone C. Love, who has been presented as a drug dealer. Widowed mother of Goldfarb, Sara Goldfarb, has been shown to have obsessive glamour for television. She gets a chance to get appearance on TV and, for better appearance on TV, she finds the way to a dietitian and finally goes to the drug induced enslavement i.e. continuous use of diet pills, so that she can fit into the prized red dress. Disastrous consequences as well as downward spiral of the lives and their strategies of these addicts have been shown in the movie. The last 10 minutes of the movie show the final events of all the stories. All different four stories culminated during these minutes. However, as the name "Requiem for a Dream" shows it has no happy ending. The movie does not show much optimism and gives a slight punch of hope and happiness.
This movie has also shown that drug addiction is not the only thing, but dreams can also be addictive that can result in the use of drugs. In order to achieve dreams and get satisfaction in life, people can start using drugs. As for example, after using drugs, Sara was able to lose weight, and others were able to earn a good amount of money. However, drug addiction eventually results in the helpless state of moral and physical destruction.
This movie can be considered as a powerful piece of work that has the ability to challenge and probably change the mind of viewers. It has received a number of positive reviews from “Critics”. It can have an intense outcome on some people, but wonderful performances of people as well as the bleak imagery are difficult to forget. Everything makes the movie compelling to watch. Most of the reviews on different movie reviewing sites are favorable. In fact, on reelviews, James Berardinelli has noted it as the second best film after “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. After watching the movie, viewers would like other people; they care about, to see it. Darren Aronofsky’s first film “Pi” also found success, but on large scale people have started admiring his work after finding his infinite kind of vision and style. He has beautifully and intensely portrayed the mental states of the drug addicts.
