In this information age, computer crimes are a common phenomenon that costs businesses and individuals’ valuable information, data, as well as money. Computer crimes consist of a broad range of offenses committed by knowledgeable personalities who use computers and their networks for fraud, to take, alter or gain unlawful access and use of computers and the services in them. Information in any organization is part of their valued assets it can be in the form of feedback data, sales reports, customer preferences and employee information. The data supports the decision making in solving arising issues and in predicting future outcomes thereby guiding the steps the firm should adopt. Computer crimes and their trends continue to evolve as criminals invent newer and more efficient ways of attacking networks. Attacks can be advanced and persistent, international cyber crimes, social media attacks among others. The perpetrators of computer crimes are either authorized users or unauthorized users such as former employees (Roderic et al. 2014). The motivation can be to revenge or to derive monetary benefits from the data and information in the network. The most frequent types of crimes include data fraud involving, copying and modification of data, software fraud and theft of computer time. Computer crimes mostly target financial information resulting in incidences of financial frauds, identity theft and credit card theft. Cyber crime breaches cost companies millions of dollars depending on the extent of the intrusion. The firms, therefore, have to invest in education and training of their employees on security policies. Also, adopt other ways of preventing computer crimes including securing computers, networks, and digital assets through firewalls, software updates, installing and updating anti-viruses and malware software. Computers and their systems are vital assets in any organization as they support organizations in achieving their strategic goals. Consequently, no cost should be spared in ensuring they are secure.
