At a young age, I was exposed to cultural diversity. In September of 1993, I was born in Santa Ana California but my parents decided to move to Mexico. Through my childhood I lived in the village Palpan Morelos where I received my elementary schooling. In 2009, my parents decided that it will better for me to live in the United States, I returned to California to finish my education. I received my high school diploma and eventually entered Santa Ana College to earn part of my associate degree.
Difficult would be an understatement to describe my transitioning from Mexico to the U.S. I had to be independent so I had to earn in order to support myself. I encountered a number of problems including adjusting to my new environment. The life in Mexico is different from what people have in the U.S. I would describe the lifestyle here in the U.S as fast paced compared to more simple life I had back in Mexico. Due to the circumstance wherein I had to live alone in the U.S I can that I developed maturity. I learned to be wiser when it comes to making decisions especially those involving my academic and financial matters. Since 2014, I have been working as a cashier so that I can finance my basic needs and survive in this country. It was tricky in the beginning because I had to balance being a student and at the same time provide for myself. Money has been my problem ever since moving here in the United States. Both my parents are back home in Mexico and relay on me to provide for them as well.
One of the valuable things I learned from being raised in Mexico and moving to the U.S is the appreciation towards Languages. When I moved to the U.S, I had to learn the language if I wanted to ease in to the city. It was not easy, but I learned fast because I read a lot of books and articles in English. In line with this, I aim to graduate in Languages especially in Spanish. In the future, I want to give back and be involved in my community. I want to earn my degree in Santa Ana College because I believe in the brand of education that the institution offers. The college encourages its students to develop holistically with the help of its wide variety of programs and at the same time provide a learner-friendly environment. I am certain that my training in the college will give me a good leverage as I progress in my academic and professional path.
What I can offer the program is my signature dedication and passion for learning. I am currently a volunteer in my church wherein I help out people who are having a difficult time with English. My involvement in the church allows me to mingle with different people and help develop both my interpersonal and communication skills. Because of my current situation, wherein I had to support myself, I know that this scholarship will definitely help me. I am the only one supporting my parents. Both of my parents do not know how to write which made it difficult for them to find work. Despite their situation, my parents have been supportive throughout and I passionately pursue my studies for them. The help that I will receive from the scholarship will not only lift the financial burden I am currently facing but will also allow me to support my parents more. I can send them the money that I can save because of the scholarship.
If I will receive a scholarship, I can focus more on my studies because I do not have to worry on where I will get money to support my academics. Like what I mentioned earlier, I had to juggle time working and studying. There are times in the past when I would enter a class and feel extremely tried because I had to complete my shift as a cashier. It was difficult to focus on what the lecturer was saying. But my life situation made me a stronger and more determined person. I never blamed my parents for the difficulties I am encountering right now. I even use my financial problem as my main fuel to study harder. I know that I can offer more if I can allocate my resources to my studies. I can continue working but this time I will have enough to support my basic needs. As a person, I am self-motivated. I know exactly what I want in life and will stop until I reach my goals. Like what my parents would often remind me, nothing comes easy if it is worth having. If I want to be an effective language professional in the future, I need to prepare myself for both the demands and pressure that accompany the career path I wish to embark. I also know that a career in Language is both physically and mentally demanding but I am prepared for it.
Once I receive a scholarship I can assure that I will take that opportunity as added motivation for myself. I need to prove that I deserve the scholarship that I will receive and in return will double my efforts in studying. In the future, I see myself helping people learn language. I believe that when I share my expertise in language I am also giving people a chance at expressing themselves better. My ultimate goal is to positively influence the lives of other and at the same time remaining intellectually challenged. I also plan on volunteering in rural areas so that I can teach them languages. I feel that this will help them develop more confidence in themselves and will allow them to have better lives.
