Good Example Of The Way To Yourself. Movie Review
The Way is the movie by Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez filmed at 2010. It narrates about the pilgrimage which has happened in life of an ophthalmologist who lost his son. Furthermore, it describes the circumstances which inspire people for deeds and transformation of personality, emotional and spiritual world. Let’s track how changed the personality of a man who has stepped on the road to God.
The main character, Thomas, is an American doctor who lives his comfortable life in California, on contrary to his son who downshifts to discover the world and to understand himself through traveling. One day, father finds out about his son’s death at the very beginning of the "El camino de Santiago" pilgrimage. He comes to the French-Spanish border to take his son back home and suddenly realizes that he must finish the way which his son had started. The road is long but the aim supports him. Tom is carried away by the idea of the way. He decides to leaves some of his son's ashes at significant points of the route. But according to the headline of the movie:” Life is too big to walk it alone” and he doesn’t make the whole way by himself. Tom meets pilgrims from different countries with their own aims of the travel. Namely: a woman who wants to give up smoking, a man who wants to lose weight and a writer who undergoes an artistic crisis. These people seem to have simple domestic aims without anything very religious or spiritual. But during the way each of his fellow travelers turns to be very sensitive personality with deep psychological problems. They all support him and give him strength to move on.
As was previously stated, we can see a gradual transformation of Tom’s personality from suffering because of the lost to spirituality because of what he has found at the end. From the very beginning he wasn't very religious. For example, when priest proposed him to pray together, Tom answered:”What for?”. He didn’t purchase a goal to find God at the end of the road. But he felt a strong desire to complete a pilgrimage for his son. It should be mentioned that according to the parting words of the policeman: “You walk the way for yourself, only for yourself”, and Tom answered:”Than, I suppose, I don’t have any idea why do I do that”. And he really thought that the travel he did was for another person. Taking into account the fact that he was suffering because he wasn’t very close to his son, the pilgrimage was for him a way to soothe his soul. Step by step, through his personal feelings and through communicating with other people, he understands the great religious background of this travel. First time Tom shows his belief when they visit Cruz de Ferro and he reads a pray from the paper. The whole road is the way of change not only for the main character, but also for people around. The thick Dutchman reduces his ration, the writer finds an inspiration in Tom’s story and a woman shows that the aim of het travel was to find God. And the main idea had shown that the real reason of the pilgrimage is the one not expressed or even not realized. Finally, Tom understands that bringing his son to the last point of the route was not the end but a start. This experience becomes a blessing for him to change his life and travel more. He feels that comfort is not always the best choice. The best is to listen to your heart and discover yourself through God and impressions about life in all its beauty.
