Canada, one of the most highly developed countries in the world, actually risks having an economic decline within a short period of time. The reason lies in the imbalance of the quantity of graduates and that of working places. Why do young university-educated people have to work in the service sector when they entered the higher education institute hoping for career in the white-collar jobs? To solve the problem, Canada will need decades of reforming the strategy of education. The contemporary generation of young people, as well as several future generations, is lost and not prepared for the complicated system of the job search.
Firstly, Canada does not have a National Ministry of Education, thus there is no sufficient strategy and control in this area. A simple example is introduced on teachers in Ontario – the province is oversupplied with them so that 67% stay unemployed. Still, the universities keep on turning out the would-be teachers. The strategy based on keeping an eye on market trends would help to control producing specialists in the areas where they are needed. Another good example can be demonstrated on “Communitech” offering more than a thousand of working places. The thing is, only people with technology skills are needed, so it is difficult for tech companies to find the appropriate candidates. Maybe this tendency must be taken into account in the Canadian education system? There is hope that one day it will be.
The fact that Canada does not use the potential of the young people hints at the possible economic and fiscal drag. The young people, in their turn, find themselves in the devastating situation – after investing a lot of money for the education hoping that money will come back with the salary, they have to either make their living on dead end jobs or work for free (the internships which are rarely paid). Since childhood, every young person knows that to study in the university is the right thing to do which will be rewarded with the comfortable life in future. Such expectations are not justified.
Analyzing trends, it is obvious that in several decades, half of the jobs existing nowadays will simply disappear due to the global automatization. So it is necessary to take this fact into account and reconsider the specialities proposed by the universities.
Speaking of positives, the University of Regina in Canada guarantees the employment assistance to its students. The university proposes the co-operative program based on working for salary while studying. It means that after graduating, students may already have a work experience being more attractive to the employers. If they don’t find an appropriate job, they have a right to continue studying in the university one more year for free. The University of Regina does not give an abstract education but helps to step out from schooling directly to making a career.
The perfect education system can be found in Switzerland where the rate of the unemployed graduates is only 2.8%. The reason for such good results lies in the Swiss politics of taking young people to study in the universities – only the smartest can do so. At the age of 15, children decide whether they keep on studying with a view to university or start the apprenticeships. Two thirds choose to apprentice. Thanks to the apprenticeships, the country profits from the good specialists in all areas, and the university graduates have no problem of finding a job at all.
The speed of the world has become so much higher, the contemporary young generation is unlucky to experience. There is a hope that the authorities will adapt to it, and the young people will not be so lost and confused.
