Plagiarism is a common problem found in all types of writing. It is a very serious crime which can lead to serious repercussions for the offending party. Professionals, especially engineers, are supposed to act with integrity and produce their own work. Putting effort in ones work is necessary to ensure a good understanding of the subject in question. Proper and thorough knowledge will equip the writer with all the required information hence there will be no need to plagiarize. Also, in depth knowledge will raise the writer’s confidence in their work and diminish overdependence on secondary sources, which often lead to plagiarism.
In the presented case, the engineer and his supervisor were both declared guilty of copying from a report by another engineer from a different firm. The suspected engineer was careless and abused his title and profession. He violated the code of professionalism by copying someone’s work. Also, his supervisor was negligent and approved the report without reviewing it. This situation describes the dishonesty that some engineers might have committed in the course of their careers. It is unbecoming to plagiarize someone’s work by using it, partially or wholly, as part of our own work without acknowledging the source. This goes against the training which engineers receive, and offenders found guilty of plagiarism should be punished. Every writer should use proper well structured citations and be creative in order to avoid plagiarism.
The ASCE CPC was very helpful in helping the author reserve the rights to his work. The organization is very strict about plagiarism, since it can hurt other people’s careers, or benefit those who do not deserve. Consequently, CPC’s course of action was to suspend both the offending engineers and his supervisor’s membership for one year and reported the case to the members’ state licensing board. They were also made to send a written apology to the complainant. These punitive measures were aimed at preventing the recurrence of such a situation.
I personally do not pay attention to how people do their homework in school. All that I care about is my future career as an engineer. I always try my best to present good work and help others in areas where they encounter problems. Plagiarism is a very serious offence which should be avoided by all means.
