Almost every middle school, high school and college harbors students who are victims of bullying by other students. There are many reasons why students are bullied, and some are more prone to be bullied than others. People take many forms of bullying such as physical abuse, verbal bullying, and emotional abuse, cyber-bullying and racist approach to bullying. (Nansel, et al., 2001).
Along with violence among the youth, bullying is one of the worst forms of abuse that the youth could take. It leaves several psychological, and social impacts on the person being bullied, and the bully himself is a spectacle for those around him. It is studied that bullying can happen anywhere, and youths belonging to any city, rural or urban area can be subject to it.
There are certain risk factors associated with youths who can be bullied by others. The most common one is the appearance of the youth; being overweight or fat or being think, skinny and underweight. The other is wearing glasses, or dressing up differently from others that give the popular or confident ones an edge to tease and eventually bully over. Another factor for bullying is for a youth to be new to a school, unfamiliar with others, making him liable to pranks and getting bullied. Some youths are overly weak and look unconfident and easily scared hence they are the ones that can be oppressed by the stronger and more confident ones. Those who are not quite popular amongst the rest of the people or do not have a larger social circle of friends are also liable to bullying. Sometimes it is also those people who are bullied that do not easily get along other people because they are rendered as annoying, uncompromising and seem like big ‘attention seekers’ and generally irritate others with their behavior.
Bullies are those youths who are popular, or have social dominance amongst the others and are overly concerned about being popular and controlling everything around them. Then there are those bullies who seem less socially involved, don’t do well in academics and are isolated from others.
Physically hurting or teasing others is a form of bullying. It involves kicking, pushing, shoving, slapping, poking and abusing someone’s property. Verbal bullying is the form of bullying that hurts the most because what is said is mostly personal. It is the most common form of bullying that involves calling names, insulting, teasing, using aggressive or bad language, whispering something wicked, passing offensive remarks and making fun of others.
The consequences of bullying are not that positive especially for the youth that are bullied. According to a survey by the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance, 14.8% of youth were bullied by cyber crimes, 19.6% were bullied on school premises and 8% of the youth had tried to commit suicide. (Frieden et al., 2013).
Verbal bullying is a sort that leaves deep psychological impacts and can cause the youth to develop insecurities. Some students also fall into depression; others develop low self-esteem, and it can lead them to abusing others and later on becoming bullies themselves. Social media is a new place where youth is bullied; a good 2.7 million students are bullied by 2.1 million students who take the role of the bully. (Bullying Statistics, 2010).
Hence, that vulnerable youth in the society need to be protected from bullies because the repercussions of bullying are dangerous and for the weaker ones, usually fatal. Teachers, parents and peers of these youths need to take a step for defending these people and preventing bullies from physically, verbally or emotionally harming anyone.
Conclusively, youths at risk of bullying can be bullied by those who feel superiority over them in a number of ways. Verbal abuse is the most harmful and causes deep psychological effects. Such youths need to be looked out for by those who care about them.
