Post- Fordism and Toyotism are new production models used for car manufacturing. Toyotism was founded by Taiichi Ohno the Vice president of Toyota Motors, Japan. Both production models cater to the need for a production model that car manufacturers can use to strive in extreme competition by reducing production costs. As the production demand remained more or less same so the area to be focussed was cost reduction. Post- Fordism challenges the Fordism concepts of centralization of production activity. Concepts like Just In Time and Kanban help in bringing the entire assembly team together to increase work efficiency and solve any production issue at the same time. The information flow is now from the bottom (worker) to the top level (manufacturing head). To increase flexibility and efficiency the tasks were allotted to machines and robots. Now for every new model a new assembly line was not required.

Both promote automation of tasks to increase efficiency
Workers are given more responsibility to solve manufacturing issues at their end
“Lean Production” is used to minimize wastage
De-centralization of manufacturing activity to reduce costs and save time
The above models have some dissimilarity as well
Toyotism is more about Lean aim of reducing costs by eliminating manufacturing wastage of three types (Muda, Muri and Mura).
The Toyota Production system is about giving respect to the shareholders; in a way its aim is to maximize profits from all ends. Post Fordism is not too strict in this aspect.
Post Fordism lays more stress on economies of scope. An example is the “Third Italy.” Third Italy is an area with clusters of small enterprises that specializes in the production of a component. It produces high quality products utilizing very skilled and well paid labor but the number of workers is low.
Despite their differences the two production models have revolutionized the car manufacturing scenario.
