In the time of enlightening in various fields of culture, politics, poetry, discovery, and art also medicine accomplished in the time of the Renaissance a lot. It was the time where poor and rich were getting sick because of daisies that strike and was not looking on race, gender, fame, color of skin, fortune or poverty. The essay will prove the thesis that diseases that evolved and appeared in the Renaissance had a great impact on medicine and medical treatment in the future. The various diseases in the period that followed the Middle Ages in period from 1400s to 1700s brought with it changes in society, politics, church and of course also in medical thinking and medical technics. A position presented will focus on main medical issues and reasons for medical development. Different diseases were common in this time such as clap-gonorrhea, ague-fever, sweating sickness, Smallpox, Tuberculosis, Typhus, Plague, Measles, Chicken pox and others. Because humor cannot fix all medical problems as was believed until Renaissance new ways and the medicine was developed. The reasons that support the main idea that diseases that raged in the Renaissance have an impact on medical treatment are first the greatest epidemic with high death toll, second the incurable diseases, and finally the third reason burials were not strictly instructed.
The first reason why the medical treatment changed is because of an epidemic in which the doctors and intellectuals started to think differently. The fact is that estimated death toll caused by various different types of plagues in the Renaissance from 75 to 200 million of people only in the 14 century. With Martin Luther the religion was not everything anymore, which implies too more critical thinking and improvement in surgeries and afterwards leads to a more objective and scientific thinking. With high death toll there were more bodies on which doctors could practice on, with which the anatomical knowledge improved. Before this period the medicine was largely built on the theories.
The second reason is that they were confronted with a disease that was till that day incurable and have killed millions of people and left the victims on every corner. The fact is that they were confronted with the threat they needed to face. At that time the importance of training doctors was recognized. With practice they got the knowledge that led us to today’s procedures that improve our standard of living and prolong our life expectancy. Superstition moved away to give space to the cures and herbs. All in all more respect for doctors has led to the establishment of hospitals.
The third reason why in the renascence diseases improved medical knowledge is that they found out that to stop some epidemic death bodies need to be burned not buried. First the burning of bodies was a taboo in religious societies in the Renaissance. Until then no abduction was permitted, after it could be carried out on criminals and thieves, which led to further knowledge of the human body, organs and its function.
Finally a conclusion can be reached. The main reasons that support the thesis, that diseases that appeared in the Renaissance had a great impact on medicine and medical treatment are the epidemic that created opportunities to think beyond the religion and provided many bodies for practicing, further on, no medicine to cure temporary medical issue lead to recognition of doctor training and last but not least more abductions as a consequence of disease were permitted. All the reasons support the main idea and in conclusion practicing, knowledge spreading and looking for alternatives will lead the world further. Until confronted with Renaissance diseases the improvement in medical area did not improve.
