Simon Lee comprehends the role of social change as a negative force in the life of a common man. A part from the positive effects, it has negative consequences as well. The poetry is emotional and based on a universal theme. William Wordsworth has enigmatically defined the poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility” in the Preface to Lyrical Ballads. For him, the feelings must be "recollected in tranquility" to make a poetry piece powerful and close to enigmatic emotions. Simon Lee perfectly fits in to the criteria suggested by Wordsworth. The rhyming lyrical poem praise the work ethics of the old man who is depended significantly upon his master for the wages but remains “so full of glee” even at that stage of life. He continues to work with dignity for his survival. This act of Simon has been regarded high by the poet in moral terms. The wonderful selection of phrases has done justice to Simon. We often ignore this reality of life but this poem takes us in our own probable future.
Poet hasn’t held his audience in the same esteem and directly accused it of expecting a story around line 72. This turn avidly takes the reader to find a tale in every line and relate it with his own life. The tone of words and the style of the expression make Simon a hero for them. They feel the emotions and get engrossed in the storyline because of the possible personal conviction. It perfectly recollects powerful Wordsworth‘s tranquility.
The reader has an ability to become a part of the plot because they see themselves in the role of the old man and communicate with him. It also enabled the reader to judge Simon Lee before the poet gave the final advice. Such an attribute of the poetry piece makes it exceptional
