Introduction
The concept of freedom in the United States before the Civil War was that it is a right virtually exclusive for the Whites only; African-Americans, particularly the slaves had no rights but were treated as mere objects. However, as early as the War of the American Revolution, the abolitionist movements started to gain grounds, which culminated with the emancipation of the slaves following the Civil War.
