Maritime economics
Shipping is a fascination business. It has such a long history and thus we can learn a lot from the past. The role of the shipping in the world market development cannot be underestimated. Its achievement was to link the fragments of the world into the united trade system. Among the key regions that had played an important role in the process of settling of the shipping industry were the Arabian Gulf and Mediterranean region. The Byzantine Empire, Greece and Venice had also made their contribution with the development of trade. The Age of Discovery promoted seafaring and proved its importance for the global trade development making it easier to deliver goods to the furthest regions of the planet. New trade capitals appeared on the world's map such as Antwerp and Amsterdam. However, there were some problems with ships such as the amount of cargo they can carry and so on that still need to be dealt with. So in the 19-20 centuries lots of changes shacked the shipping. This shift were possible mostly due to the industrial revolution and mass steel production. This all turned the loose system run by traders to a tightly run industry.

Cityscapes in the Baltic

The Baltic region is comparatively hard to pinpoint. It is a complex network of nations difficult to describe. There is no agreement about its location and distinguishing features. But cities became metaphors for features. Cities also represent something more than meets the eye. The Baltic cities are often characterized by replicability. Next feature is identity meaning that conformity sometimes has higher value than distinction. The city in the Baltic has always underscored interchangeability trying to avoid subordination. As the Baltic was a stronghold of oral culture, its cities represent high importance of orality and literacy of which the notion of being equal in power and influence can be derived. The oral nature of communication led to the ellipticity of the Baltic cityscape. Form and function of the cities were adopted to the northern climes. A particularly powerful form of accommodation and adaptation was translation that was closely connected to migration. The Baltic was and still is characterized by its vastitude and detachment.

String of Pearls

Hamburg is a metropolis and a core of a region. It offers an outstanding and unique social, technical and knowledge infrastructure. It is situated in one of the most developed European country thus possessing all the necessary conditions for further development. As its economy continuously grows, the city faces several challenges that need to be dealt with. The first challenge is to meet the demand of the housing market because there are more and more people who want an accommodation. This raises another challenge such as an availability of the land. The third issue is an expansion of the port of Hamburg. And, thirdly, as Hamburg is a large city, it also faces environmental problems and climate changes. To tackle these challenges some options were provided. The first one is called “A New Urban Development Concept”. It deals with housing problems and estimates the advantages of urban renewal development. Other incentive deals with waterfront transformations and city/port interface areas. This transformation begins with the oldest parts of the ports and cities. The project called “Strings of Pearls” is concerned mostly on redevelopment and renewal of the northern bank of the Elbe. Revitalizing measures are expected to have a positive impact on the city. Another step is called HafenCity. This is the largest project in Europe devoted to reestablishment of the connection between the River Elbe and the city centre, giving Hamburg a new direction for growth: down to and along the river. It is undoubtful that new projects can be designed for the future.
