The society as a whole tries so much to move towards civilization. Ideally civilization intends to get rid of some of the old practices and tries to introduce new practices that direct their efforts towards making human life better and more interesting. The efforts towards civilization in the world always revolve around the transitions in societal social life and economic practices. Over the semester, some of the main issues that have emerged include globalization, its failures, and its success. An analysis of the class reading reveals some critical issues that are worth discussing. First, is the issue of the disregard to a past culture. Many people misunderstand the past cultural practice and look at them as retrogressive, yet there are people that have survived for years in this culture without any problem. A good example is the body ritual among the Nacirema. Despite the fact that people look at it as magical, this society has thrived on these rituals for years, and it has always benefited them. One thing that civilization tries to undo is the cultures that helped the society to thrive in peace, yet some of the ideas it present do not help the same society. A case in point is the idea of globalization. In most of the class readings globalization has taken much of the center stage. There is a serious conflict between the proponents of globalization and those opposed to it. There seems to be a lot of hypocrisy amongst those proponents of globalization since as they force other nations to open their markets they still have tariffs that do not allow goods to enter into their markets. One important point that comes out from these readings is that as the developed nations try to force the developing nations to adopt some policies. These nations have not adopted the same policies. The policies seem only to favor them, and it seems only that these people have vested the interest in the whole struggle to achieve globalization. As well, there seem to be great failures of some of the institutions that are given the responsibility to drive the agenda of globalization and ending poverty. Institutions such as the IMF, WTO, and the World Bank do not seem to address the real problems in the society. They only seem to champion policies that do not work, especially in the developing world. These topics seem to inform each other in a powerful way. One of the ways that these come out is the fact most of them talk about the failures of the institutions that are the responsibility of helping the world to grow. They all address the problems of developed nations trying to force policies on developing nations, yet these policies do not help these nations. At some points there appear to be divergent opinions, especially on the issue of globalization. As other, seem to claim that it is right for the nations to adopt the policies developed by the international organization as opposed to locally developed policies, others argue that these policies are not beneficial at all. As well, as some other reading talk about globalization, others focus on issues such as feminism and national unity.
The most intriguing reading on this unit is the issue of globalization of poverty. The issues being raised in this reading are true and factual. The idea of developing macroeconomic stabilization and structural adjustment programs does not help in ending poverty. Over the years since these programs were introduced the challenge of poverty has never ended. The policies only play a key role in destroying countries national economies, causing economic genocide, increases the concentration of wealth and causes social pluralization. It is evident that the society today struggles so much with the challenge of poverty. While the rich people live better lives and still get even richer, the poor people endure in poverty and live miserable lives. All that the policies do is that it increases the gap and makes it harder for the poor to survive. It makes sure that the poor develop more dependency on the rich and lack means of their own to survive. The same just translates even to the countries that are developed. They make sure that they have starved the developing nations that they cannot reach the status they are in. As they enjoy the monopoly of the market, they keep on forcing the developing nations to liberalize their economies. I solemnly support the perspective and the argument of the reading as this gives a clear and true perspective on the issue in the society.
