Example Of Design Analysis Essay
For the current analysis, I have chosen two popular applications that are often used on mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, but can also be used on desktop computers. They are Instagram and Foursquare. The first I like and enjoy using every day, while Foursquare, especially after its recent splitting into two programs – Foursquare and Swarm – I do not like using. The applications will be analyzed by their usability, usefulness and emotional impact.
The application that is not so good for me is Foursquare. At first, it served for check-in service, in which I could see where my friends are and what they think about some place where they are having fun or just eating. There was a game element of gathering marks and bonuses, as well as choosing the places that were the most interesting. Today the app serves only for finding the interesting places, as check-in service was given to the other app – Swarm. Now I do not like the application in term of UX, as it lost a great deal of its advantages after splitting, and there are also certain problems in other UX aspects. In terms of usability, the program is nice, although in the past it was much better. As for the usefulness, there are certain problems with the variants of places the app is offering to me. In some cases, it can show some place that is further from me first in the list, which makes it not so useful in the given context. The emotional impact is low for me, I do not like the new version and the problems it has in it.
Overall, the popularity of these apps shows that a lot of people like Instagram very much and join it every day, while Foursquare is losing its popularity gradually. I think that if we take satisficing into consideration, in the case of Instagram, it is much easier to find what you are looking for and satisfy your interest. If we take Foursquare, we see the problems with sorting of the places nearby, which means that high satisficing cannot be reached in such a situation, as the good place nearby would be more appropriate. I am sure that in the future more and more apps with great UX will appear, which will enhance the experience of people and set even higher standards.
