Nothing is exactly similar to the other unless it has been photocopied and still there would be a slight difference in the paper orientation and ink color. In the world, we live in there are many types of milk producing animals. However, it’s the cows that we have an interest in.

Introduction

Dairy cows’ yields different quantities of milk and this is true even if a twin is selected, the quantities would still be different. A research on the varying trends in these quantities and factors causing them would be suitable.one would tend to wonder, if they are twins and they are similar in physical appearance then why the difference? Or an even better question, they are in the same environment but why these variations in milk productions?

Objectives

One of the main objectives would be to have the knowledge of how different factors will affect milk production and how other factors may not affect this. One would also be interested to know whether the genes of the specific animals played any role in this trend. Therefore, if the genetic variation is an important factor in milk production, the study would help to develop breed with favorable genes that can increase milk yields. The research would be important so as to determine what factors hindered more yields and what could be done to improve these statistics.

Problems

Not many farmers or rancher would readily give true and reliable facts about the statistics of their milk productions. Many ranches and milk production farms are many kilometers apart to transport would also be a likely problem to be encountered. Some of the statistics tabulated may be irregular since some of the cows involved were not on a healthy basis so this somehow affected their production. Also, few owners would accept blood samples of their animals to be taken. Some of the methods of data collection may prove to be expensive e.g. DNA extraction and gene mapping are expensive and tedious processes.

Methods of data collection

Use of questionnaires- questionnaires with different questions concerning the animals involved was printed and in every milk production area visited the farmer would be required to fill in the specific details.
Blood samples-blood samples of the specific animals would be taken and preserved for DNA extraction. Collection of blood sample is expected to take 1 week while DNA extraction will take three weeks.
Tabulation-information about breeds of animals involved would be tabulated. A pair of animals from each breed would be used for the research the information gathered would then be compared with different and similar breeds from the same or different locations.

Ethical considerations

The researcher would have to know how to relate with those they are getting information from. They have to prove themselves to be people who are reliable and could be trusted. Also, if the informant requires that certain information be kept constant, then the researcher would have to do that to avoid bad blood between them and the informant.

Appendices

There are many types of breeds in dairy milk production, but the most common ones are around ten. A pair of each could be selected from around four different locations in order to provide favorable comparisons under different environmental conditions. Cows are common to find in almost every place, and they are divided into simple classifications, so they are cheap and easy to do research on. Direct PCR amplification is one of the cheapest methods of genotyping, and it is the most suitable one for this research. This amplification will take 4 weeks. The research could take approximately ten weeks.
