Dramaturgy in sociology is a concept that was developed by Erving Goffman in the year 1959. The concept uses a metaphor-the theater to describe human behavioral traits. The basic idea is that humans are actors in all aspects of life. The perspective claims that human interactions are created in such a way that each person seeks to control and/or influence the opinion of others. Such can be though management of through two-way-street approach. In this case, identities and the behavior thereof depend on the audience one acts. Each identity attempts to create an impression that is evaluated by the audience to determine the kind of relationship that follows. There are aspects of the front stage-the impression the audience views directly, and the back stage, the activities that are not visible to the audience and happen when the audience is missing. It is important to understand dramaturgy since humans tend to act differently in different situation so as to create the right impression. The role human beings play such as parent, job hierarchies from grassroots workers to the CEO, the government leaders, etc., form the character that each member of the society may act.
For example, it is common for customers in restaurants to make demands from the waiters. In most cases, for the best interests of the business reputation, the waiters take the demands politely in the attempt to please the clients or customers. Once the “somewhat” stubborn client leaves, the waiters tend to complain to the other workers of the difficulties they faced with the client. Sometimes, such could be in good faith while in other instances in bad faith. Whatever the case one may be in, one must pay attention to what one does, how, where, and why so as to create the best impression.
