Technology has created a lot changes within our society. This can be marked in the words of Sherry Turkle, who was a MIT professor. He said that, ‘people are friendless but afraid of intimacy. Digital linkage provides the fantasy of relationship without the need of friendship (Duxbury et.al. 28). We anticipate much from technology and little or nothing from our friends.’ A lot of questions have come up on use of smart phones, everywhere and anytime when one is supposed to be involved in other important issues. For instance it is interesting that student’s focus on their phones during a lecture, drivers do the same while driving, the same thing happens while walking or even while in family dinner with friends and family. All these drawindividuals’ attention away from important activities one is supposed to focus on (Fuhrer et.al. 6). The most interesting part is what actually draws people into their smart phones and why are they too much on their smart phones.

Shopping or seeking a particular product

Accomplishing certain issues such as managing finances, wellbeing and efficiency
For preparation such as to plan for the anticipated activities
For discovery such as searching for news and information
For personal expression such as being involved in hobbies and curiosity
Lastly is ‘Me Time’ which involves searching for leisure or entertainment through watching fanny videos, evaluation of Gossip websites, playing games and carrying out widow shopping just for fun
Despite the different uses and satisfaction that people receive from their smart phones; what people don’t understand is that we should know when to switch it on and when to switch off. If this is not understood, then we will be completely switched off from each other. From my observation, it is evident that use of smart phone is a hindrance to communication. People use it as shared prop, to cover their embarrassments and to create silence (Duxbury at.al 88). It is therefore evident that this creates a situation where individuals withdraw from each other instead of interacting.
The use of smart phones has therefore swept away social etiquette on the use of cell phones. The phone is currently considered of great significance in relation to people around. It is attention-grabbing that phone has taken over the place of a colleague. This can be termed as a kind of rejection and a decrease of love of human dignity just for a device. This is a clear indication of development of self-centered society, whereby a person would put many efforts on the world within their smart phones instead of interacting with people around them.
The reasons why people rely too much on their smart phones since individuals’ whole life as outlined above are within the smart phones. As a result of this, people feel that there is always a thing to look or search that they feel is of great importance as compared the people or the surrounding environment. Often people use their smart phones asa way to opt out of their conversation that they are not interested with or even cannot contribute into it. For instance, during lectures, when student are bored or a particular concept becomes difficult, what follows is that they focus their attention from the lectureinto smart phones to fulfill their outline desires. This is a dangerous developed habit since it cuts the link with immediate people who could be of great help. This behavior is currently critical social prop replacing the olden social props such as alcohol and cigarettes (Duxbury at.al 54). The huge link between individuals and their smart phones is the fact anything coming into the smart phone is connected to him or her.
On the other hand, in just a mere conversation, he or she could not be major focus. The use of phones is developing individuals who cannot accommodate others life since currently people are anxious of their own life. Therefore, it is evident we don’t acknowledge others. For instance, often individuals are shouted at by their spouses since they don’t offer complete attention to what she was communicating, but instead much focused on the phone. What could this signify is that there is something of much significance than you and more so, not within the room. What people are not aware is that spending most of their day on smart phones increases myopia (Fuhrer et.al. 48). All the time use of use of smart phones to attend emails, viral videos apps and SMS causes eyes to strain more as compared to when one is reading a book. The phones are usually held closer to eyes and therefore force eyes to strain than normal situation causing discomfort or even fatigue.
Virtual relationship can be defined a sterile and unfulfilling. For instance the use of Skype can bring up an interaction between two individuals who are very close. This is actually better as compared to that moment where there would be no interaction at all. However it hinders personal experience, the effort, the linkage and also extracts the verbal cues to understand that other party. Through the use of virtual social interaction, one becomes fixed and protected by the screen. One selects how to present self instead of being portrayed who you are. Therefore, one of the reasons why individuals prefer computer communication is that they are able to present themselves in the best version and in the most appealing ways (Fuhrer et.al. 74).
