Brief Description of “Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan

Having been published in 1989, the “Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan describes the real issues ascribed to the lives of Chinese-Americans. It provides a glimpse of the plight, joy, cultural expectations and dynamics of Chinese-Americans. It spans time beginning from 1800’s to the late 1900’s. Specifically, it focuses on an interesting story of four Chinese women who experience tragic moments, loss, and deceit as well as fear to develop their daughters’ lives in the United States of America. This narration goes back in time and describes the lives of these four Chinese-American women, specifically pointing the challenges they faced in the United States as they attempt to develop a foundation for their daughters. Tan elaborates how each family faces a challenge to communicate across generational and cultural gap. That is, the four Chinese-American mothers are facing challenges to communicate with their daughters owing to the fact they grew up in different cultural environment. The daughters are growing in a Western Culture while their mothers were brought up in a strict traditional Chinese culture. The Western society, just like the Chinese Society is Patriarchal nature. Male dominate all the societal facets, beginning from economy to politics.

Policy formulation is one of the strategies that can be applied by the United States to improve cultural diversity. These policies can be formulated in a manner that they allow the introduction of other cultures in the United States and create platforms for the general population to learn and appreciate other cultures (Kamalipour, 2014). Additionally, the United States can initiate awareness creation programs where the American populace are taught and trained on the importance of cultural diversity to social and economic development (Kamalipour, 2014). Consequently, the Federal government, through learning institutions can also initiate exchange programs where students are taken to different countries and regions, purposely to learn the aspects of other cultures.
