Sociology is an aspect of the society involving a group of people interacting and residing in a definable area sharing practices values and belief (OpenStax College, 2013). Sociology is a subject motivated by the desire to describe an ideal society, and there is a wide range of matter involved. When it comes to matters of sociology, the most important aspect besides the people and the beliefs is the societal setup which includes the developing processes through which people interact. Time is an important factor in sociology because it through it there are different experiences and with two distinct factors, the past, and the future incorporated. In considering the matter of time, the concept of the sociological imagination crops up. Sociological imagination refers to how individuals understand their present and that of other people in relation to the historical and social structures. The centerpiece in this context is that considering how people interact over time, it is possible to establish the factors influencing their behaviors, attitudes and culture.
Socialization within a specified setup is affected by the historical periods in which it takes place, and the concept of the sociological imagination best explains the concept. In the early centuries, the world ushered in an era commonly referred to as the industrial age. A number of new inventions that influence people’s daily lives and how they interact with their environment have come to be. Historical events have a direct connection to intellectual formations and the inherent quandaries in the modern sociology (OpenStax College, 2013). Scholars argue that the way in which people define the society influences how the society is and the actions of the people towards the society. Socialization teaches individuals the society’s expectations in different cultural sets,
Families and school setups have changed over the years, and now the most conspicuous changes in both setups are the freedom involved. Family and school are the major agents of socialization because they teach what a growing person needs to know. In the modern era unlike the past, there are more tools and channels providing information. In the past, families and schools operated on almost definite scripts with the parents and teachers being the main definitive parties to guide the students. For that matter, the children grew up observing specific aspects of the society. For instance, the library was a place to study and to obtain information. Today, students can find a library online whereby it becomes difficult to know whether they are reading on academics or not. In the family setup, for example, it was upon parents to teach the students about certain aspects of interaction including how to interact with peers and so on. Today, people access information from all corners. Consequently, kids become independent, since the standard model that characterized the traditional set up has immensely changed. There is a growing aspect of independence in the children because information is fed from various sources online and other mediums.
Technology which is a scientific application that helps in addressing different challenges in daily life has been one of the most important agents of socialization change. People have different access to technology therefore creating a phenomenon known as the digital divide (OpenStax College, 2013). Technology is a source of knowledge and so evidently today, the more people have accessed technology in the recent years, the more knowledge they gain by learning several things across the world. The difference in technology access is the main reason socialization differs in the social arena geographically.
People learn objects of material and non-material culture from mass media thus aspects of beliefs, value and norms have changed over time. People can today interact with others as well as watch how others interact in the family and school setups which have assumed a more multi-cultural figure into the modern era. The socialization that takes place in the setups changes the expectations. The changing social expectations in the process of re-socialization means old behaviors that were helpful in the previous setup are no longer relevant in the current setup because of the new school and home environment, for instance. With every new concept incorporated in the institutions that people interact in and watch others interact, individuals have to leave behind their old identity and are given new identities through a process known as degradation. People, therefore, build new identities matching the new society.
Creation of norms is both a theoretic and methodological affair in the society and the main idea is the knowledge of the conditions and design under which they get created. The strengths and direction of the norms have changed over the years, and the changing ideas behind the factors that bring about societal change explain the idea (Openstax College, 2013). The value of the aspects of the society that present the knowledge influences how the norms get defined. That explains the differing norms in different societies and the habitualization process where people interact. It is not all about the internal creators anymore, but also the external factors as well. Norms are not formalized today although they get internalized by the people in the society.
