Although the food is a basic commodity that is necessary for everyone, accessibility of food to many people, especially the poor, has become a threatening problem. In the Peel region, a significant population living in poverty is challenged by food accessibility because it does not meet the requirement of the food system in the area. The problem of the food security is not only reflected in the local level but also in the national level. For this reason, Canada has developed a food safety plan called Canada’s Action Plan for Food Security to curb the scarcity and inaccessibility of food in the region (Health Canada, 2012. This paper provides an insight of the ways food security policies and problems are socially and politically constructed.
The political elites are strongly involved in the issues of sustaining food security in the national, provisional and national level. The federal and provincial governments have development various policies and debates to ensure that all residents can access nutritious and safe food (Ministry of Health, n.d.). For instance, the Canada’s Action for Food Security was established through the collaboration of the civil society and government to enhance food security. The political concerns are raised by the political elites to ensure that the Family Tax Cut is implemented so that people living in poverty can access nutritious food. In addition, on a monthly basis, the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Glen Murray, and Toronto Center’s MPP host a debate named Idea Distiller. The aim of the discussion is to discuss, social welfare, seed supply and agricultural issues, the environment and how food security related to the health of Ontario resident (Randhawa, 2015).
Media is also a significant participant in ensuring the large population in Ontario and the national level have access to nutritious and safe food. For instance, the Community Food Security (CFS) have shown the importance of media communication, among other factors in addressing the issue of food security. For instance, the “Buy-Local” campaign has been facilitated by the internet, TVs, and billboards. The purpose of this campaign is to foster awareness by promoting the local farmers by buying their products and also increase opportunities for the local buyers to consume healthy, local foods (Ontario Health Promotion E-Bulletin, 2015). In this case, media has been recognized as efficient communication channel to disseminate accurate and consistent messages concerning food security from national to the local level. Government, individual and non-governmental website have been published over the internet to address this issue (Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada, 2015).
Public must also engage in measure that can foster food security in the Ontario region. For instance, public health nutritionist collaborates with CFS to address the issue of food security in Canada. In addition, the dietitians in Canada has joined hands under the Dietitians of Canada to improve the food security to all households, individuals and the overall population in Canada. The dietitian recommends an approach that can reduce health inequalities by enhancing the social justice. The Dietitians of Canada also requires the dietitians to familiarize with process and issues that can achieve food security (Dietitians of Canada, 2015). This can be done by enhancing community-based food programs, social change, research, and participating in coalitions and partnership that aims to achieve food security to al Canadians.
In conclusion, it is evident that every actor including media, political elites, and public has a significant role to play in order to enhance food security to all Canadian. Collaboration of these actors is not only important but necessary to ensure the individual and household have access to nutritious and safe foods. For instance, as indicated above, CFS needs media to promote food security awareness while public collaborates with the CFS too. The political elite also needs media to host the important debates concerning food security so that they their message can effectively reach the public.
