Mobile videos are videos that are played on mobile device such as smartphones, tablets and connected TVs. Streaming is also part of mobile videos which has a compressed content and played by a user in real time (Rouse n.p.). Its emergence comes together with existence of the internet. Anyone can use the internet anywhere and stream videos with the use of modern-day computers. It is the fact that its ease of use that mobile devices have become one of the necessities of people at present. These types of media have become a way for people to relay information and share details of what is happening around the globe. It seems that its use have become more diversified and more complicated.
Protests are a type of opposition to an issue or people. It is in the form of words or actions people used in expressing their opinions. The common way of having protests is the use of streets. People who are in the same side of things gather in one place to express their opposition. It can take many forms. From statements to mass demonstrations, each of these can effectively translate into change of governance or policies (“Protest” n.p.).
One of the most recent event that used mobile video as tool on protest is the Hong Kong protest, also known as the Umbrella Revolution. Protesters uses wireless broadband, multimedia smartphones, mobile video making, and live streaming in order for the government to hear their voices (“Mobile Video Plays” n.p.).
Cardboards are out, social media are in. Facebook and Instagram are the most popular social networking site today. They have become a medium for protesters who posts pictures, videos and live feeds on the place of the protests. This was made by Hong Kong’s highly advance communication system. Every buildings, subways, and even on the streets have internet access. Dead zones, which wireless communications are inaccessible, is rare.   But for the rest of China, it is a different story. The government blocked many of the social networking sites. The videos and picture in the Hong Kong protest was filtered by popular social networking site Weibo and WeChat (“Mobile Video Plays” n.p.).
Telecommunications Company cannot handle the network traffic during the protest. Each second, thousands of pictures and videos were posted online. If people are uploading and downloading at the same time, the network cannot handle the traffic and will collapse. This does not become a problem with protesters. An app called FireChat allows users to chat with the use of wireless connections such as Bluetooth and Wi-fi (“Mobile Video Plays” n.p.).
Mobile devices will be a ground where government and people meet. It will be a medium for authorities and people to talk over issues without harming each other. The Umbrella Movement will not be the only protest that will use mobile videos. Many more will follow because they have seen how effective and safe the protest are. Crowds are becoming more intelligent as the ages became more advanced. It will be just a matter of time before a similar incident will occur (“Mobile Video Plays” n.p.).
In terms of contents, various types are available throughout the web. These popular contents are the ones popularly being streamed or downloaded by the people.
According to Savitz, branded content came on top of the list. Content comes first before the brand. He cited the commercial of BMW titled “Alter Egos.” Many celebrities appeared on the commercial but no single car of BMW was present on it. It just implies that the types of people that like their commercial are those who like luxury vehicles. Original programming comes next, specifically TV Programming. For example, the TV series “The Walking Dead” has 16 million weekly viewers. The producer of it, AMC, decided to upload behind-the-scene stories because their viewers may likely be interested in online contents if it was tied to the TV series. Lastly is the live streaming content. Events that were shown live may gather millions of audiences if it is an important one. Live interviews and sporting events are the biggest beneficiaries.
According to research done by Cisco, in 2017, about 69% of the traffic in internet will be consumed by videos. It will be one of the most sought after advertising media. Its rapid growth indicates that it will not be gone anytime sooner. A trio of videos released by Volkswagen has gained a combined 155 million views. If you were an advertiser, this will be a big accomplishment. In addition, it also cost less. The distribution of the materials can easily be done digitally. Fewer people will also be needed. Different types of mobile videos will also gain revenues. Online ad video revenue will reach $5 billion in 2016. Its costs will also decrease as companies rush into videos, resulting in opening of placements (Trimble n.p.).
Mobile videos are a powerful tool now. The contents shall be regulated. Anyone can post anything on the internet. Its content may either be useful or harmful. It shall be used with proper so as not to harm other people. It is an effective tool for protesters and even for companies. If it is utilized in a better, more people will benefit from it.
